You don't have IS or VR on your lenses and don't want to use a tripod?
You want to spend about... 1 $?
Check this out... it makes sense in a way...

Nice idea Kris. I guess by using two of them, you could place one under each foot and have a bi-pod due, to the tri-angulation of the setup, which would drastically reduce horizontal as well as vertical movement.........
EDIT: I will be making one........

One dollar?
Off I go to B&Q...
Into the nuts and bolts aisle to get my bolt... ah, they only come in packs of 20... £4.75!
Oh well, the washer will be cheaper... Thankfully due to it being a big one they are sold 10 per packs... £3.00
String. Ah, I could find 2m lying around at home. £1.75 for a new ball then...
Then as a non smoker I'd need to buy a lighter...
$1 my bottom...
Nice idea though!

You might have a problem getting the correct bolt in B&Q. I think most hardware stores only sell metric sizes these days. I was surprised to discover that the standard thread size for camera tripod mountings is either 1/4" x 20 or 3/8" x 16. I'm not sure if this is the old Whitworth or UNC as both fit the bill.

A nice idea, and may reduce camera shake in fairly high shutter speed shots, but it's certainly no replacement for a tripod. You won't be able to take any long exposure shots with this, which is essentially what a tripod is for. It may provide a cheap, albeit less effective replacement for a monopod, but then, you get what you pay for!

Atleast it is better then nothing, and carrying a big tripod with you can be a disadvange from time too time.
