I was thinking of writing a small 'stub' article for Simviation at wikipedia - since there doesn't currently appear to be any article at all on the subject of the 'V'. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help, since;

1; I'm not familiar with all of the site by any means
2; I'm not the greatest at working with wikipedia's code entries that you have to do to put in pictures, links etc...

good idea or not? Ideas and opinions welcome... was just an idea that came to me recently as a small way of giving something back to Simviation... Smiley

P.S. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. Wink

The reason there isn't one is that when there was the Avsim half-wits kept vandalising it and writing untruths to put us down. Pete doesn't like that sort of thing so the article got yanked Wink

Sounds like a good idea, would be more than happy to help out. A stub of what? Wouldnt it be better to create just an article for it?

I'm happy with that. It's true that Simviation was the 1st FS site to be included in Wiki - They must have put it in themselves way back years ago. Then about 2006 it got 'edited' to make it one that the Wiki staff considered worht removing. I don't know who did this --- I suppose an idividual who didn't like us. It's a shame people can do this!

A well written article would be very much appreciated! It has to comply with Wiki standards of being informive & relevant (or whatever) otherwise it will be removed.

Anyone who did this well would be considered of VERY great merit & it would not be forgotten.  Smiley

It would be best to put the article here 1st for suggestion & editing if necessary otherwise it could be counterproductive.

My first draft:

Quote:
Simviation(www.simviation.com) is a specialised website for users of the software series "Microsoft Flight simulator". The website hosts (insert download number) freeware aircraft and scenery for use by flightsim enthusiasts, using both a paid for system(which is faster than non paid) and a nonpaid download area for these files. On the homepage there are tiny snippets of users screenshots, which are taken from the simviation forum, where users share advice on flightsim problems and tweaks. They also can post their own aviation photos and in game screenshots as well as general chitchat. This service was recently upraded to the most recent Yabb 2.2, which provided a refreshing new look to the forum.

Simviation also has its own video hosting service "simteevee" where videos recorded of Fs gameplay can be hosted. This is a recent new addition to the already vast array of services provided by the sites owner, Pete and its technical staff.

The idea of the site is information sharing, to the advantage of its users rather than detremental critisism.

I ran out of stuff to say after this, so if anyone has anything/lots to add then feel free to. Cheers

I'd edit this as follows;

Simviation (www.simviation.com) is a specialised website for users of the software series "Microsoft Flight simulator". It was founded in [?] by Pete Daly, and was then known as 'the strip'. It is  currently considered to be one of the top three sites dedicated to flight simulation, the others being (I don't know them, so if someone could insert them here it'd be great). The website hosts free aircraft, scenery and other free add-ons for use by flightsim enthusiasts. Somewhat unusually it is not necessary to register at the site in order to download these add-ons, and although there is an option for paid membership this only provides an increased rate of download - all downloads are available to anyone who visits the site.

The website has a large forum area, and places a large focus on artistic screenshooting from the flight simulator series. This is reflected on the homepage of simviation, with prominent links to the screenshooting areas of their forums. The forums are also used as an area where simviation members can converse over topical and personal matters, as well as a location where advice can be exchanged on information such as prominent or new add-ons for flight simulator, advice on flight simulator problems, and software and hardware 'tweaks' to improve performance as regards flight simulation peri[heral software or flight simulator itself. There is also an area dedicated to aviation photos. The forums were recently upraded to the most recent Yabb 2.2 forum software, which required a complete shutdown of the forums for the duration of the update.

Simviation is also known as the parent site of a video hosting website; www.simteevee.com. 'Simteevee' is a website dedicated to videos recorded in flight simulator. This is a relatively recent addition to the Simviation community.

The premise of Simviation.com is information sharing, to the advantage of its users rather than detrimental criticism which is known by most web users to be prevalent amongst web forums. The forums are widely reputed as, and indeed marketed by Simviation's administration staff, as being a 'family forum' - the emphasis is on a friendly atmosphere - and this atmosphere is maintained by a team of administration staff as well as Pete Daly. This is part of what makes the site so attractive to flight simulator users.

------------------------------------------------------

Sorry for the comprehensive changes, but I felt that your description felt a bit too much like it was advertising Simviation rather than giving information about it.

Also, sorry to Pete if I've spelt your name wrong! Grin

In wikipedia terms, a stub is a small article. I thought this might be a good point to start at, rather than trying to go the whole hog straight away.

I think what might help is if pete posted his list of what he thinks are the biggest features of this site, and then we write a section of the article about each... that way we can be more thorough in our coverage.

Just a few minor changes have been highlighted above... but what we have is brilliant. Still, I'm sure we could write more about other areas. I shall go and research... beware... Grin

EDIT; we could also include the following, or a derivative of the following;

Simviation also has a 'real aviation' section primarily aimed at providing information concerning aviation in the real world. Categories include; 'aircraft manufacturers', 'airports' and 'airlines' amongst others.

could anyone expand on this?

I think if you go down that route you'll end up listing all the forum titles. Smiley Hence the "wide variety of matters".

The only other change I'd suggest is removinng the line about the Yabb 2.2 upgrade. Most people wouldn't really be bothered about what thr forum software is, and within a couple of months that line becomes dated, and it also becomes out of date as soon as another upgrade appears.

Certainly no mention of me please! Wink

& Also Simteevee is intended for all PC games once we get it properly set up. PC FS is a very limited horizon in videos given that there is just one publisher.

Nice start though Smiley

I'll take a proper look & think when I have a chance later.

Thanks

Yes, but it is a major and relevant topic in the site currently, so I think it should be metioned... at least while the change remains recent. Remember, wiki articles can always be edited later on. Wink

We could simply have a line that says; the forums currently run on Yabb 2.2 forum software. Smiley

I was actually referring to the real aviation section that can be accessed from the simv homepage.... not the sub-forum. I should've been more specific.

So here is what we have so far; all mentions of pete removed.... I guess he doesn't want hordes of adoring fans from the wiki pages to add to the ones he's already got here. Grin

---------------------------------------------

Simviation (www.simviation.com), sometimes known as 'SimV' or 'The V' is a specialised website for users of Microsoft's Flight Simulator and Combat Flight Simulator franchise. It was founded as "The Strip" in 1998. The website hosts freeware aircraft, scenery, and other miscellaneous files and utilities for use by flight simulator enthusiasts. These range from FS98 to the most recent FSX, and for all three releases in the Combat Flight Simulator franchise. It is currently considered to be one of the top three sites dedicated to flight simulation [1], along with avsim.com and flightsim.com

Simviation offers free downloads to all users, in keeping with the underlying Microsoft Flight Simulator freeware ethos, and also offers a membership system where users can pay a small annual fee to recieve faster download speeds.

The website has a sizable forum area, which provides several areas for support and a focus for various aspects of the hobby, such as system performance, simulator setup and a dedicated area for various screenshots (images taken from within the simulator). The screenshot section comprises a major part of the forums and includes several competitions and contests. This is reflected on the homepage of Simviation, with prominent visual links to the screenshot areas of their forums. The forums are also used as an area where Simviation members can converse over topical and personal matters, as well as a location where advice and information on a wide variety of matters can be exchanged. There is also an area dedicated to aviation photos. The forums currently operate on Yabb 2.2 forum software.

Simviation is also known as the parent site of a video hosting website; www.simteevee.com. 'Simteevee' is a website dedicated to videos recorded in flight simulator and is ultimately aimed to provide an area for videos from gaming in general to be posted and shared. This addition to the Simviation community was launched in summer 2007. Other sites hosted include the "Historic Jetliners Group" (historic jet airliners for Flight Simulator, and "The Lair", an excellent little site offering tutorials for earlier Flight Simulator editions, advice for which may now be hard to come across.

The premise of Simviation.com is information sharing, to the advantage of its users. The forums are widely reputed, and indeed are marketed by Simviation's administration staff, as being a 'family forum' - the emphasis is on a friendly atmosphere - and this atmosphere is maintained by a team of administration staff. This is part of what makes the site so attractive to flight simulator users.

-------------------------------------

Bearing in mind wiki needs citations, some areas will need proof provided - such as the claim (I read this somewhere a while back but not sure if it's true) that simviation is one of the top 3 fs sites.

EDIT; Look what I found while searching! http://www.simviation.com/index2.htm

Is this genuine? All I did was google 'simviation top 3 flight simulation sites' and it was the top result! Shocked

EDIT 2; I found a citation for simviatin being one of the top 3 sites; citations are represented as such; [#], where # is a number.

EDIT 3; I've added a couple of nicknames to the article with explanation. Wink

Wow that was an old page - from 1998.

Google is useful for some info - totally useless for others.

The way to find top FS sites is to use something like Alexa which is a rough value on site popularity. You can do comparisons.

See this
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1196725046/0#0

The forums should be given a mention but not headlines as they are only about 5% of our pageviews. Software is irrelevant ... Wink the forums Design areas - studio, comps, etc - these are the areas that have the greatest output in terms of unique talent that we should be proud of being a home to.

I'll think about the rest but keep 'em coming! (ideas that is) Smiley

The website has a sizable forum area, which provides several areas for support and a focus for various aspects of the hobby, such as system performance, simulator setup and a dedicated area for various screenshots (images taken from within the simulator). The graphical (photos and screenshots) area comprises a major part of the forums and includes several competitions and contests. This is reflected on the homepage of Simviation, with prominent visual links to the screenshot areas of their forums. The forums are also used as an area where Simviation members can converse over topical and personal matters, as well as a location where advice and information on a wide variety of matters can be exchanged.

Other sites associated with Simviation include the "Historic Jetliners Group" (historic jet airliners for Flight Simulator), and "The Lair", a miniature site offering tutorials for earlier Flight Simulator editions, advice for which may now be hard to come across.

The premise of Simviation is information sharing, to the advantage of its users. The forums are widely reputed, and indeed are marketed by Simviation's administration staff, as being a 'family forum' - the emphasis is on a friendly atmosphere - and this atmosphere is maintained by a team of administration staff. This is part of what makes the site so attractive to flight simulator users.

--------------------------

I've done my best to reduce the forums paragraph but I couldn't do much because I felt that almost all of what was already there is relevant and major with regards to those using the site. I think to balance it out, what needs to be done is not to reduce the forums paragraph but to expand the other paragraphs. I however don't know enough about alot of this site to do much along those lines... I think I need some input from you or one of the mods here pete, if you wouldn't mind... Smiley

I had a feeling that graph would come in handy Tongue

I just had another look at how we are going, and the results are still the same. I also stumbled along another thing on the Alexa website. It is a list of flight simulator websites, ordered by popularity. We come in second. Flightsim is first, an avsim doesn't even get a mention on the front page.

yes, but saying that isn't correct; it's a totally different website associated with simv, rather than a site hosted as a sub-section of simv.

Well HJG's homepage does say "website hosted by Simviation.com", as does Doug's Lair. Wink

I struggle to comprehend exactly what "hosted in direct relation to" means. Smiley

What nit-pickers we are... Grin

'hosted' is the wrong word to put in front of that sentence I'll admit... I'll replace it with 'associated with...'...

I read through everyone's comments above, and I had not seen this mentioned yet, so . . .

I just wanted to let you know that if you have a problem with article vandalism (as was mentioned before), you can request that Wikipedia limit access to editing the article or freeze the ability to edit the article period.  I know they do this from time to time on various articles that are prone to vandalism.

After all the hard work people are putting into writing up an article about SimV for Wikipedia and after all the hard work Pete and the Mod's have put into making SimV a place worthy of a glowing Wikipedia article, it is nice to know that the vandals can be kept at bay.

All the best!

I think it's not a bad article now - thanks!

The thing that Wiki doesn't want to see is promotion. What they do want is objective information.

I'll mull this & hopefully tomorrow go over it in detail.

Only just found this thread - looking good chaps!

Perhaps we could write smaller subarticles about Studio V and other specific forums on the site, or would that not be wholly necessary? (if you think we could I'd be happy to contribute something Smiley)
