Several weeks ago I ask how hard it was to actually build your own system.  Everyone encouraged me to give it a go.  I'm glad you did.  I spent a day putting all the pieces together and now I have a great new machine.

I was on a budget so I had to make several compromises, but I spent $850 for the following:

Antec p182 case
msi 790x motherboard
Phenom 9500
Gecube HD 3850 (256)
Lite-on 20x DVD
WD Sata 320 Drive
OCZ Gamexstream 700 PSU
OCZ  4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 sticks

I already had Vista x32.
I plan to upgrade my old CRT monitor some day soon.

I'm still tweaking the settings for FSX, but it is a great improvement over what my laptop could and couldn't (Acceleration) run.  I will certainly one day replace the phenom and hopefully get another 3850 for crossfirex.

Thanks again for your encouragment.

Milo

Well done Milo, wasn't so bad was it?   Smiley

Before you know it you'll be an expert system builder and tweaker, able to answer any question here in the hardware forum..

Now that you've been bitten by the bug!

There is nothing like the little prayer before you push the on button and the happy dance after the monitor lights up.

Congrats on your new computer and welcome to the addictive world of computer assembling.

It is addictive.  I find that I read the hardware forum at least as much as the general FSX one, and I am already thinking about what I want to change in my current system.  A friend came over last night for dinner and I found myself giving him advice on how to build his own.  I wouldn't have thought it possible a few weeks ago.  I was tempted to offer to build the system for him, but I think he should have have the fun if he is putting out the money.  I am also happy that I now know what the hardware information people put in their sigs actually means.

Thanks again for your help.

You could always sit in with him whilst he's doing it, offering advice when needed. That way he get's the satisfaction, you get the glory  Grin

If you are married the secret to building is convincing your wife what a wonderful computer you have and she should have one like it herself.

When you buy the parts for the next one you get the upgraded goodies and let her have the old one because it is already set up and running. Then you are the hero but with the newer computer.Wink

I am married, funny story. She said no to finacing another Dell. So I put a plan into action about building one and pay cash as I go. She was all for it and when I told her the Dell I have now will be wiped clean of anything related to my flying and gaming. She thought it was a great idea that she would have her own media center, told me to use my bonus's to pay for the parts and to do so as quick as possible. She went from "wait another year" to get R done ASAP so I can have a media center. It was like I pulled a Jedi mind trick or something Grin

Made me laugh. I actually have found it easier to convince my wife that her computer is no longer getting the job done. (She works on line and requires a good reliable computer).

Then I tell her she can have the spiffy computer I have and I will use her old one until I can build myself a replacement.

The fact that an $800 off the shelf computer would do her just fine is something I try to keep from her.
