did you installed the drivers from the cd that came with the card? If so then uninstall it and install the latest one, me and my friend bought the same 8800gts and i installed latest driver and everything was smooth he did it from the cd and har problems similar to your description. So first thing to do i suggest is you try to update your vid card driver to the latest version.

I had the latest but saw the opposite advice, reinstalled the cd drivers. EDIT: Even with the old drivers i'm getting the jaggies and the lower-than-hoped-for fps. for anyone who knows 3dmark06 here are my scores:

3DMark Score      6226 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score      2460 Marks
SM 3.0 Score      3332 Marks
CPU Score      1388 Marks

Graphics Tests
1 - Return to Proxycon      20.373 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest      20.622 FPS

CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley      0.446 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley      0.692 FPS

HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0)      40.114 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0)      26.527 FPS

does that look about right?

Are you sure you have plugged in the extra power supply the card needs? If you have then i would look at changing your power supply for something more beefy.

it is plugged in, PSU is an Orion 480W. Everything else seems to work fine, HL2 is getting from 50-100fps most of the time with everything turned up and at 1680x1050 resolution.

The PSU was on the cheap side (about $30 CAD  Roll Eyes ), would that make that significant a difference? fps and image quality is almost the same or worse than with my old 6600gt

EDIT: the 12V rail is rated at 17A

Yeah i would say the PSU is your main culprit, 17a is definitely too low, I have a Tagan 480watt and that is rated at 30amp.

I would recommend Tagan PSU's (if you can get them over there?)

EDIT: Just to add, all the latest cards have a feature whereby if they dont recieve the power they need they will throttle back performance, this is whats happening to your one.

PC Power and Cooling 610

all fixed

but remember, you must also set the card up correctly in the driver settings too.

and by all means use either the lastest official driver 169.21, or the 169.13 -28 beta's

I've been filing your hugely helpful advice prior to launching my 8800 GTS 512mb, and on December 12 you said "I would advise not using version 169.21 ...issues...problems." So I red-inked that. But today the advice is "...by all means use either the latest official driver 169.21..."  Hopefully the issues and problems have now been fixed?

I stick with 169.13 or the 169.28 betas   this is january, that was december, Nvdia drivers change on a weekly basis now adays and the only reason they slowed dow was because of xmas
