There is a website for the 3 g switch that NickN kindly suggests its here:
http://www.prophotowiki.com/w/index.php/IncreaseUserVa

and worth a look before doing the switch

you must be careful of the variable used. If you do not understand how to fine tune that yourself by taking into account the address space the video card also wants to suck off the system, I suggest you leave it at the value I posted above. That website refers to values well above what I posted, which can be done, but not with a 768MB+ video card in the system

I have Vista Home premium 32 bit,   four sticks of 1 gb each,  at first Vista 32 bit did not see 3 gig's,  so I went in to the control panel to system advanced and set the page file to 0,  ok,  rebooted and set the page file to the max recommended,  rebooted and all's well with 3 gb's................

Also for those with trouble,   Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that uses more than 3 GB of RAM: "STOP 0x0000000A"
There's a fix here...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=929777

Good find.. I will hold onto that one. As more and more discover the advantages to running over 2 gig I am sure its going to come up again. I bet MS adds that one to future Vista DVD runs.

Although one can also remove all but 2 gig, install and plug it back in after the install was complete, then make the cache edits

Actually this is an old trick to fix a corrupted page file.
When you add more ram your page file is no longer valid and needs to be reset,  hense  the set to 0,  reboot....
Also works for Vista 64 bit

Does this all mean I should make the switch from 2gigs to 3gigs with the boot.ini hack?  This will improve my FSX performance?  If so I'm going out right frickin now and getting another 2-512mb sticks.  I'm getting all excited now.

And will this slow down XP at all?

I thought on some previous post that we also had to define FSX.exe to run at greater than 2 gigs. There was a small utility that did that. useserva tells the OS, what tells the application?

SP2 or Acceleration already has the changed fsx.exe file in it. Aces marked the file so all that is needed now is the OS hack

The manual method can also be done with FS9.exe too and it will recognize more than 2GB

Nick, thanks.  Would that mean that all I need to do is run the Command Prompt and insert the bcdedit \ etc line?

You may recall I am running the dreaded Vista OS.

Hi NickN,
I have tried the 3 g switch settings using two 1 gig  and 2 512 kb memory modules.  Watching taskmanager while  sim is operating, I find that while it lists 3gig available, it is still using the page file while available memory still shows over 1 gig left available.  Thanks for your help before about settings for FSX and about Nhancer, and O&O defrag.  Sure made a difference.
