You can't really blame them, the Dakar is dangerous enough without added homicidal maniacs...

i suppose the regs don't allow anti-terrorist weapons...yet. how would terrorists attack the rally? its so spread out.

Attacking the rally would be very easy to do. First of all because they are so spread out it's very hard to keep security tight. Picking out a single truck, car or motorcycle would be piece of cake. Second of all, they camp at night. Shooting one rocket inside the camp from a distance would be very distructive.
Now I can understand that the organisation cancelled the rally. I just think they did it at the wrong moment. Like Jan de Rooy (Dutch truck contestant) said tonight; I wouldn't have mind if they stopped the rally at the Mauratanian border. At least we wouldn't have prepared for nothing and we would have had a few days of rallying.
Rumours are that this will be the last Dakar for a very long time......
