Hi, all. Starting to build the shopping list for this year's BUDGET  Undecided rebuild. Looking at the Asus PCI-E ES8500 (C$110) and while I'm sure there'll be no restriction to FS9/XP SP2, I'm wondering if it will be sufficient for the eventual FSX/Vista upgrade? The board will be an Asus AM2 with a dual-core AMD, also budget priced(considering M2NE with NVidia 570 chipset - C$110) . And yes, I'm partial to Asus because I've had excellent service from the current Socket-A setup. I should warn you that I'm still very much a newbie at this, things like overclocking still scare me!! (Besides I need to keep some $$ for the old GS850, and the old Dodge, and the Subaru 4wd, etc!!) All comments welcome.

I would go for an intel processor, intel, atleast for now, has the upper hand in performance.

Guess I should have asked the question differently - although I see w. didn't think the 8400 card offered much. I also wasn't asking for AMD vs Intel opinions as I already have decided to stay with AMD. Anyone have constructive comments on the NVidia 8500 cards? Or should I go to an 8800 series, which are still pricey here?

If you can, I'd get an 8800GT. Much better than an 8500.

An 8800 would be more worth your while, have you taken a look at the 8800gt? Probably the best bang for your buck you will find. I wouldnt expect much of anything from an 8400 or 8500. What are you looking to spend, (ideally and maximum)

OK, while I would LIKE an 8800, the best pricing around my neighborhood is in the C$280 (8800GT) area, and I was hoping to get a decent card in the C$100-150 area. Guess it's not-gonna-happen. Unless someone has something good to say about the AMD-ATI Radeon combo. ????

I just ordered a 3850 (256) for $165 from Newegg.  You should look into the card - it compares very well against the 8800 GTS http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/03/the_best_gaming_graphics/page3.html for a lot less - and it sounds like ati cards are not suffering shutters in FS like the Nvidia cards.

Thanks, milo1272. I'll look into that. Which brand name did you buy? (Asus, EVGA, etc.)

I went with a Gecube - largely because their price.  With a rebate it was about $15 less than its competitors.  I've only had the card running for a few days in my new build, but no complaints yet!  I had heard that the card architecture is the same for all makers . . . but I really don't know if that is true.  I hope so.

DON'T get an 8500!! I tried that first with my new system and was not impressed. When I found out that another PC shop had an ATI Radeon HD 2600Pro for £20 LESS than the 8500, I took it back and got the ATI instead. Although it's not a top end card, the 2600 is MUCH better than the 8500.
