Firefox. Why? (Read 2180 times)

Hello lads,
Got this idea when Mark posted his question about his Firefox problem. For as long as I can remeber there has been this Firefox logo/button on Simviation.com. I'm no user of Firefox, I use Maxthon. It's a browser with the IE engine but with a lot of extra options. Can someone explain to me what's so special about Firefox? I hear a lot of stories about it but what makes it better than IE for example?

Crash for f***s sake look at a pre-2.0.0.10 version 'cos after that seems to be shagged! I've just wasted 36 hours or so getting things working again and sadly V.2.0.0.0. seems to be more stable than 2.0.0.10 or 2.0.0.11 which both are about as stable as an epileptic weasel in a bowl of jelly during an earthquake!

I have Firefox 2.0.0.11 which I believe is the latest version as it updates automatically. I've had no problems with it.

My poor old rig has been up-and-down more times than a tarts knickers due to it Doug.
I've switched back to 2.0.0.0 and since then nay worries. I'm baffled as normally Firefox is so thoroughly tested before release but this time something seems amiss....

I'm wondering how you would switch back to a previous version. I assume only the latest version is available for download.

You have to remember that I've got a steam powered 7 year old machine. It seems to be held together with string, gaffer tape and chewing gum! It just doesn't agree with my rig.
I'm sitting here running 2.0.0.0 and nowt has gone wrong since putting it on the system

I used both IE and FF, currently on FF, mainly deu too it being faster, just as good looking, and it can actualy draw the webstandards as they are supposed too be and not the forced-down-on-us webstandards that microsoft likes. Although that is just a developer's thing.

Do the right thing...Go for Opera. I use it and it's soooo easier & practical to use, and its so fast as firefox(maybe faster than FF).
Trust me, you are going to love it(as I did).

According to Pete, Opera has problems with downloading files from Simviation.

I tried Opera some years ago. Couldn't understand what all the fuss was about & returned to IE. I now use Firefox.

We (back when I was a whipper-snapper) started using it in the mid 90s when dial up was the only option. Where we were, and for its main use (downloading FS files!) it was noticably quicker than IE, even when in the free (unregistered) format, with the adverts. When we registered it became quicker still. With the advent of widespread BB it became academic, and spending money on it was futile.

Firefox works great for me with the latest updates
I've been an IE hater for several years. I don't have the pop-ups with Firefox, its fast, and a clean look with only the features I want...also seems like when I used to be on IE the computer got loaded with spyware, addware, viruses, etc...don't seem to have hardly any with Firefox

I jumped onto the firefox bandwagon well before it was popular! I got my hands on the first Alpha and have stuck with it ever since! The is the list of why FF is better than IE:
1. FF had tabs well before IE (where do you think microsoft got the idea?)
2. Mush faster than IE
3. Fully customisable! You can even tweak it to make it go FASTER!
4. Addons! There are literally thousands of addons available for just about anything
5. Far more secure! It doesn't have the security holes of IE. No viruses, no adware, no bots, no pop-ups
6. Pop-up blocker! I can't live without it.
7. A specific addon called AdBlock Pro! It removes any and all adds off the webpages.
8. Spellchecker
Perfect to combat all of the spelling natzis here
9. Continually being developed by a large group of programmers so all security holes, bugs and problems are plugged very quickly.
10. Version 3 is coming very soon!!

ive used most of the major web browsers (IE 6-7, FF,Opera,Safari) and im stil using firefox, its just easy, clean UI, tabs and for some reason i realy like the folders bar, its just quicker than searching through that "favourites" menu.

I just download Firefox 3 Beta 2.... It is great!! It is faster than before, the download manager is improved and it has a great unique feature. You know how you type in an address into the address bar and it drops down with possible matches from site you've visited before? Firefox has improved on that. It not only auto completes URLs but you can also type in PAGE TITLES! and it will auto complete and match it to the URL!! You have to see it in action to fully understand. For example I can type in "Simviation forums" and it will come up with the URL to these forums, saves trying to go through the links or type in that weird URL!! It has already become second nature for me to use it.
http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2007/11/firefox-3-location-bar-just-became-almighty/
this gives a more detailed example.
Mic - I love that film! It's the best one in my opinion!

It should be out soon... Usually the second beta is the one before final release. They sometimes go through 2 or 3 release candidates before final release though, but these are only for final bug checks. As far as I can tell they have no specific date.

Firefox 2.0.0.11 already does something similar. Type
simviation forums
in the address bar & press Enter.
I'll keep to that for now as I prefer my English (British) version.

What that does is a Google Search set on "I'm Feeling Lucky" for what ever you type in the bar, it isn't the same feature.

Pros for it over IE? It has more customisation... you can change the themes and there are lots of toolbars (more useful ones in FF ive seen, than IE)
Other 'gray area' stuff:
Firefox isnt actually any more secure- In an IE6 and Firefox 1 test, IE6 was more secure and I think the trend is still the same
Firefox shouldnt actually perform better- It uses more of your system than IE7 and so weaker systems may stuggle from FF
Firefox is 'faster' than IE- Umm, well, FF just got a pcpitstop download speed of 1312kb/s and IE7 just got 1577kb/s. But in many cases the 'fastness' is equal in both.
I am a firefox user, but it isnt a super browser... Opera is much more secure and soposidly faster than IE or FF

Well, I tried FF for a few days. Man, was it annoying. I believe everyone when they say it's better, it just didn't do it for me. I'm back with my old
Maxthon browser
. Much easier to use and just as fast.

Pros for it over IE? It has more customisation... you can change the themes and there are lots of toolbars (more useful ones in FF ive seen, than IE)
Sorry, I have to take down a lot of your comments.

Other 'gray area' stuff:
Firefox isnt actually any more secure- In an IE6 and Firefox 1 test, IE6 was more secure and I think the trend is still the same
Firstly you can't compare current versions of Firefox to Firefox 1! There have been far more improvements and three years of development since then. Firefox is a dynamic, always evolving browser due to its open source nature. IE6 and 7 are stagnant and only get major updates every few years! As a result Firefox is far more secure due to the fact that all security problems are patched quickly.
Next Firefox doesn't support ActiveX, the Achilles Heal of IE6 and 7. This one API is what allows all of the spyware, adware, trojans and othe nasties onto your system.

Firefox shouldnt actually perform better- It uses more of your system than IE7 and so weaker systems may stuggle from FF
You don't state which version of Firefox you are basing this on, but I will assume a recent one. Nor do you state your source for this statement. I just ran a few test on my own rig and found that with one page open, IE7 and Firefox both used the same amount of resources. As soon as I started opening a few tabs, IE7's resources absolutely ballooned past those of Firefox. Firefox's resources barely grew at all.

Firefox is 'faster' than IE- Umm, well, FF just got a pcpitstop download speed of 1312kb/s and IE7 just got 1577kb/s. But in many cases the 'fastness' is equal in both.
What is downloading, would you please tell? Is it just a webpage, or is it a large file? Doesn't matter, I can disprove both. For normal browsing Firefox was much faster than IE6, even from a fresh installation. For IE7 I can't comment because I have never used it. I can say though that after some tweaking that anyone can do Firefox is even faster, and I would put my money down on my Firefox being faster than IE7. If you don't wish to tweak, there is an addon called FasterFox which does all of the hard work for you.
For download speed of large files, I've had Firefox up to 2.50 MB/s.... Uh, I think that blast IE7 out of the water, no need to go on.

Perfect to combat all of the spelling natzis here
Clearly the spell checker doesn't have the word "nazi" in its dictionary.

Wingo...
firefoxmyths.com is my only source... though it is critasised for not being top notch, its the only source ive seen which actually has more than just 'oh it just is better'
I was download an image. pcpitstop has an image weighing about 3mb and it records the time from starting the download to the end of the download and gives you a kb/s speed.

tweek - Ah, you have to love the irony!!
machineman9 - That webpage, even though it does state sources, is highly biased and only uses selective sources to quote its information. not to mention it is also very old. For one, it claims the market share for Firefox has been falling. At W3schools they have a table showing the market shares of each browser, as you can see Fx has been growing while the total share of IE has been falling.
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
Also, I gave that pcpitstop a trial. here are my results.
IE7 - 1039 kilobits per second
Firefox - 2127 kilobits per second
If you want some unbiased opinions on Fx, I would suggest googling for some reviews by Cnet, download.com and other reputable sites.
