Judge Aussiewannabe hit us with a very tricky comp this week…. And got some great responses, considering Xmas is in the air… his gift to this humble gallery-keeper was a perfectly turned out ‘Verdict Thread’ which needed almost no work – thanks for the pressie, Aussie!! Here he goes:
First of all, while I realize the holidays are upon us and others had plans, I want to say thank you to all who participated in this week’s JC Contest. Second, I was very impressed with all the entries. Everyone went above and beyond what I was looking for in terms of “steady nerves.”
In first place:
Mictheslik!!!!
Mic took full advantage of editing privileges and showed that you don’t have to see the whole AC to get the feel of the screenshot. A 40kt crosswind while landing in a storm? Now that steady nerves!
CONGRATULATIONS, MIC!!!!
In second place:
PD87
Despite what Jack may have thought as boring, I found otherwise. This is a perfect example of what I believe is known as mountain wave turbulence. The engines exhaust as well as the position of the AC projects that steady nerves feel. I also found the color effect to be very soothing. Yet, I’m puzzled that he left out his trademark. Jack, where is the sun?
In third place:
Fighter25
Like finding a needle in a haystack. Being a carrier landing, I was expecting a night landing, but am delighted that Fighter25 choose fog and rain as part of his screenshot.
Honorable Mention:
Jankees
A very well thought out scenario that kept me glued from beginning to end.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
Thanks Aussiewannabe and thanks to all for taking part!! We’re going to take a short break for Christmas, and the new Judge’s Choice comp will be up Wednesday or Thursday night, whenever Mic and I get time to sort it out…
Happy Christmas to all!!

This pilot should have checked the weather forecast before heading out. This is a very dangerous situation for modern airplanes but even worse for that little biplane and its pilot, with wind rain and lightning

Mine will probably be one of the most boring entries (story and effect-wise), but I liked the feel and coloring of the shot.

Hard theme.
Well I couldn't think of anyhting more nerve racking than a rainy, foggy carrier approach.
One false move and..

Is it?
The idea is for you to
cook up
something that relates to "steady nerves." Time was an issue in getting another idea ready for the contest as my first idea was not acceptable for the JC Contest.
Top marks for you thinking "outside the box."

OK, here's my entry:
There's a story attached to it as well:
Capt. Grant of the 462nd FS/506th FG got separated from his squadron over the bay of Nagoya, meaning he had to find his own way back to base, on the island of Iwo Jima. This is when his training becomes all important. After some 3 hours flying over open ocean he should be getting close, but his radio isn't working anymore...and he runs into a stack of cumulonimbus, thunderclouds. Was his dead reckoning correct? He's already at his ceiling, 27.000 feet, so does he go through it or around it? Was his dead reckoning correct? Does he still have enough fuel left after 7 hours flying? Hang on, is that an island that he sees? If he is on course, it should be Kita-io-jima, and home just 50 miles beyond that, but if he's blown off course, it may be Japanese-held Chichi-Jima, meaning AAA and at least 200 more miles to go...

What would sharpen your nerves more than this? Inverted on a foggy day and the engine is on fire!

Sorry that I didn't get an entry in when I said I would; I had an attack of 'lack of inspiration'.
Anyway... two F-35's, one RN, one USMC, lift off from the deck of USS Stennis in low visibility for a night raid on Iraq.

You're fine as far as the deadline is concerned.
It's now 1:45pm my time, making it 7:45pm GMT.

Okay, after flailing wildly to get my 9 vs X competition shot in as fast as I could because I'm away till Tues evening I'm going to have to hit the sack. I'll get the winning pics in the gallery sometime during the following week, okay? Tues or Wednesday night - Scouts honour!
Cheers
