I bought a new graphics card today. A Geforce 8600GT with 1024MB on board. All is running as advertised however the box says DirectX 10 compatible, but came with DirectX 9. So, firstly, when I go to MS DirectX 10 web page and click on download I am directed to download DirectX ver 9.21. Am I being a little slow, is that 10 because I can find no reference to download 10 anywhere.
Secondly, I am running XP. Is DirectX 10 worth it.

Thanks

Matt

Interesting, I hadn't seen that yet. But it seems like a classic hackers' fix to me.

Did you read all the comments?

I don't know if I would trust it.

Wouldn't it be illegal to distribute dx10 for use on XP, as it is the property of MS? Not to say I don't like the idea of having DX10, but still.... Wink

Besides....there seem to be a lot of users reporting problems in the comments.

Alright heres the lowdown on "DX10 for XP" Its more or less a "crack" that will emulate DX10 but not actually give you full DX10 emulation. Also my guess is that any games that were coded specifically for DX10 will not have proper acceleration because your hardware can't support proper acceleration. Also DX10 is only going to be for Vista, its how MS is planning to push Vista on gamers since they really have no other way to.

So my official verdict is, if you want DX10, buy Vista, you want full acceleration get a GPU that can support it, you want to try this "crack"? Go ahead, but MS isn't going to support it.

And one final thought, if you have never done anything in visual basic (C++) don't even bother, you will end up way over your head.

Cheers

Yes its illeagle to distribute MS's own work as your own, but what these guys have done is taken source code from MS and worked it into a release of their own, thus making it their intellectual property, and as long as MS is given credit for the source, no leagle issues are to be found.

Also if you redistribute a freeware MS app, as long as your giving MS credit for it, they can't stop you from sharing their free software.
