Why don't we made ,like the screenshot somekind of reward ,a humble condecoration every year or monthly about members whos being doing well things to SimV a good contribuitions like for example Nick or striker , Brett Henderson,Hagar , we  would make somekind of elections ,sumit votes thru a PM to Pete , Dave or other mod  and have a winner ,this would encourage some of the good members that without nothing exchange dedicate part of their time helping people...

Alex

Just a small acknowledgment to those who has been helpful to this site, and just to be nominated would be also very well to them, think about it..

True... but isn't that the case for most of these types of awards...? Obviously the person who would receive this award would have done something very special and contributed to the forums in numerous ways. Each Mod could simply put forward who they think should receive the award and why, and If you all discuss it you should be able to find a suitable winner.

Think of it a bit like the Oscars then... with awards each year for different things.... That sounds a good if we have a selection of 'awards' and acknowledgements for members who have contributed in different ways... e.g. One for, Best Screenshot of the Year, using the guys a Studio V to pick a suitable line up, Most helpful member of the Year... etc...

I think it'd generate bad feelings in some corners and that is antithesis of the SimV spirit.

I think it would be a good idea to do a SimV end of year awards... all very tongue in cheek of course!
Categories could include:
Photographer of the year
Spammer of the year
Most improved member
Screenshot artist
Mod of the year
Pete of the year (OK.. only joking on that one  Wink )
F1 prediction contest in the Auto forum of the year  (Again, joking   Cheesy )
PITA of the year
Most missed
Funniest member
Outstanding contribution to SimV
And maybe, The John Howard (miltestpilot) Memorial award.

The list could go on....

This is likely a "bad" idea for all the RIGHT reasons.  I really appreciate the sentiment behind it.... but likely it would just start a lot of "Why him and not me" thoughts in the background.  Screenshot competitions are enough for that potential, I think.

I remember Eno created something along these lines a couple of years ago. Even though the titles were made to be funny, and there was no polling, it still created a lot of "why not me" resentment. Maybe if you feel strongly about and would like to praise someone's contribution, post something in the Cafe and the replies to it will probably be as satisfying to the recipient as being voted to an award.  Smiley

Maybe the awards need to be more specific, for example:

Simviation owner of the year
Hungarian based ex-pat mod of the year
Member of the year (for members emeritus)
Cornish Seafarer of the year (where is he at the mo?)

There could be no complaints then! Grin

It may have done, why do you ask? Smiley

I would have thought that, since as ozzy mentioned, the antithesis of the Simv spirit is spite and jealousy, then there could be no scope for bad feeling in the first place... I'd hope we're all logical enough to recognise that saying someone's 'the best ______' is not automatically saying 'you're the worst ______'.... but I do see john's point.

I agree that compared to a screenshot comp, it would be a huge undertaking and would also breed resentment, to the extent that it wouldn't be worth it.

Here's an idea for a compromise: a thread inviting members to point out the contributions of other members. Maybe replies (particularly "dittos" or retorts) could be discouraged; just a list of "thank yous"?
There's nothing stopping anyone from doing this at any time in the Lounge or whatever, but if there is to be a "well done" thread I feel that the above format would be more successful than a "member of the year contest".

It would be an ego boost for whoever got it, and an ego destroyer for whoever didn't... that said, isnt that what the screenshot contests can be like?

I think maybe a general sort of thankyou to certain members could be alright, but still you could go naffing off the users who tried hard and didnt get their names down.

So I vote against- it could work, but there are alot of people who could take it for the worse.

I really enjoyed reading this thread, as the issues it raises (good, bad, and otherwise) are things I have often pondered myself.  Let's see if I can sum things up succinctly and sensibly:

1) Humans are by nature both competitive and comparative.  That is, we like to try to be the best at something, and we like to know how people or things measure up to one another.  You know, we compare things like aircraft performance, number of flight hours logged, and the sizes of our . . . of our . . . um . . . of our feet!

2) Humans are cooperatively social animals.  That is, we form extended social groups for work and leisure where we pool resources, make collective decisions, and try not to kill one another as often as we might kill strangers, bill collectors, and people who cut us off in traffic.

3) Being competitive and cooperatively social does not always go together, but we try to make it fit.  Attempting to do the seemingly impossible do allow us to fly, after all.  Thus, we have sporting competitions where we expect the winners to not gloat and the losers to not pout.  Professional sports and free agency have buggered this concept beyond repair.

4) Gloating and pouting only inflames competitiveness and undermines cooperation.  SimV, wanting at all times to encourage harmony amongst its members tries valiantly to avoid creating situations where wankers may be born of gloating and pouting.  However, we are all probably still prideful little buggers, and try to outwit one another with skillfully rendered avatar's and siggy's.  I would either gloat or pout, but I have failed to figure out how my images stack up to other's, and I am thus reduced to "glouting".

5) Despite all that harmony, we are still humans, we are still competitive and cooperative, and thus the question remains, Is there some sort of yearly competition that can be help without us all ending up in a big dogfight in the sky?

Well, I have tried to think of a competition that can feed our hunger to have things weighed, measured, and stacked up against one another without making us have a big, ol' family brawl here in the forums.  My thought:

Aviation related end of the year awards!  Topics could be: best new aircraft, best story of pilot skill, best service on a commercial passenger liner, biggest aviation news of the year, and so on.  Suggestions could be gathered and posted (by some sort of official person in charge of such a thing), people could vote (secretly even!) on their choices, and the results could be announced.  And then we could all win and drink in celebration.

I am particularly a fan of drinking in celebration!

Well . . . that turned out way longer than intended, but I hope the (horrible) jokes interspersed throughout at least made it a bearable read.

~Darrin
