Ok everyone.....here is the deal....
I am looking for the song from top gun that is played when maverick is launched from Alert 5 at the end of the movie. It is a sort of fast paced instrumental. Tried the soundtrack...no luck.

Having had a copy of the Top Gun soundtrack back in my younger days, I can tell you that there are several instrumental pieces in the movie that are not on the tape, one being Maverick/Goose chasing Jester early on in the movie.
Your best best is to watch the credits at the end of the movie. They list all the music used in the movie.
Good luck!

Speaking of which, anyone know where I can get the ORIGINAL Top Gun Anthem? The sound track adds synthesized sound and an extended part which I think degrades from the track.

There were multiple, but different, releases of the sound track. It might be better to look look up the artists, especially Harold Faltermeyer (who composed the Top Gun Anthem, played by Steve Stevens, and Memories).

Perfect for an awful 80s film then. What's even worse is it was directed by an Englishman...

It's possible that what you're referring to is part of the "score", that is, the incidental music composed for the film (by Harold Faltermeyer) as opposed to the pop hits they stuck in there to sell tickets.
I'd watch it again to find out, but I hate that movie.
Even being about naval aviators and having some decent flight footage couldn't save that film... blecchh.
I did have lunch a couple of times in the excellent BBQ restaurant featured in the movie, though...
