Evening everyone, just a quick question here....

A few weeks ago I had some brake work done and my mechanic did some
other minor things for me which resulted in a car that runs better,
stops much better, etc.

So after fixing my electrical issues by just disconnecting the
battery completely I decided today to run over to my storage unit
take my car out and run it by the gas station to fill the tank which
was sitting dangerously low.

Five minutes down the road and half way to the gas station my friend
who was along for the ride was the first to notice a light white
smoke coming from the front of the dash, primarily through the
defroster vent. So I pull over real quick and throw open the hood and
find that the smoke is coming from the PCV Valve on the engine valve
cover.

Previously there had been a rubber grommet, with a short 15-18" hose
through which the gases passed through and presumably lower to the
ground and out of harms way.

Currently the valve is there in the valve cover, but there is no hose
attached to it. I've been looking in my books and noticed that on
some models there was a road draft tube system similar to what was
previously employed on my comet. And on other model cars there was a
hose that ran from the pcv valve back into the combustion process
athrough the carb plate or something along those lines.

I had looked into this previously because I didn't think it was
proper to have it set up without a valve beforeeeeeee, but since it
ran well I wasn't going to mess with it at the time. Now however
anytime the engine warms up I get a nice plume of exhaust gases
entering into my car, presumably through the many MANY little holes
and what not in my rust bucket.

...so now that I've wrote a short novel, anyone have any ideas of how
to go about fixing this problem? I've found it to be quite
*exhausting*

Thanks in advance to anyone who's taken the time to read this! Smiley

Exhausting? heehee, good'n... But seriously folks...... *badda-dum* ......ahem...Let's compose ourselves.
In your case and from an ecological standpoint it's probably best to route the PCV back to the air breather, carburetor, or intake manifoldvia a hose - usually 5/8 inch diameter. I believe there are kits to modify the air cleaner if it doesn't have a spout for the hose. Make sure to use vacuum hose as normal hose can colapse. Most diesels in class A and B trucks do still use draft tubes, but they're special.

lol, Another fellow comet owner pointed out that it could also be a heater core gone bad, which would make more sense to me than what I originally thought.

THough I still need to get my PCV hose setup right Smiley

I've noticed that the carb on my car has a inlet tube with no hose attached to it, that basically runs right into the air horn (top of the carb where the air cleaner sits). Only problem with that is the hose coming from my PCV valve is almost twice the diameter of the inlet tube that it should slide onto.

I'm not sure if there needs to be a plastic or metal adapter to convert from one size to the other or something?

well once I get the heater core fixed I'll run it down to the local napa and have the old man Don tell me what I really need to do Smiley

Should be easy enough to figure out which component is causing the problem. A heater core leak will emit a sweet smelling steam much like a radiator leak, not smoke. A PCV leak will have a burning oil smell. Replacing the heater core in that vintage of an automobile should be pretty straight forward.
Anyway, best of luck.

lol, since my nose is all stuffed up from this cold I've been having this past week I didn't actually smell anything, I was just taking my friends word on what it smelled like, but as it was nice clean white I'm leaning more towards the heater core definately being the problem.

I'm going to run over there after work tomorrow and check and see if I can figure out 100% that that is what happened. Then I'll get one ordered as a search through local parts stores didn't turn up any results in stock. Fortunately one ordered from autozone starts out at 20$ Smiley

I've even got step by step instructions in the shop manual for the car  Shocked

And it will likely be made of brass, unlike that beer can stuff they use in newer cars. Wink

Just a tip: Twisting the heater hoses to break them loose will save you a little aggrivation. Most folks like to just try to pull them off. If they won't twist, purchase a hose removal tool or grind an old screwdriver down to a blunt point and bend about two inches of the end  90° or so. Then slide it under the hose being careful not to puncture it and run it around the fitting until the hose is loose.

Got this coming in the post, waiting for it to get here so that I'm not doing more work, I'm replacing the plenum because the original is cardboard and not in the best of shape so I thought I might as well replace it while I was at it Smiley

Looks like a very good grief saving investment.
Ah, the joy of old cars...Always finding stuff to fix and replace. Grin
