So my Norton Anti-Virus 2006 expires in two weeks, and am wondering whether I should just renew it, upgrade to more protection, or get a different anti-virus. From what I have heard, Norton eats up a lot of memory, hampering FS performance (a primary concern of mine). Any thoughts on the matter?

Ditch Norton. It is a system hog! If I were you I'd give AVG a go (it is free)
I've been using it for nearly 3 years and am more than satisfied with it!

As Mark said, AVG is free and I've used it since I've been PC savvy (7-ish years) and have never had a problem.
Good luck uninstalling Norton

Grisoft now has AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and AVG Anti-Rootkit Free available. Looks like a nice little suite.

After uninstalling your current antivirus, download and run RegCure. I did and I cleaned up my register data and got an extra 5 to 7 FPS on FS9.
