I was wondering for those of you who play an instrument what type of music do you play, and what type of music do you listen too. I'm very weird... I listen to this yet I play this   I also play a lot of rock for fun, but thats not what I'm currently trying to perfect.

A lot of people I know listen to very different things from what they play or sing, so I was wondering if all people are that way, or just some Cheesy

Now there's something I'm very bad at. I really haven't yet learned how to properly play both the base of a song and the melody together like that Grin

Unfortunatly I've never learned to play any instruments. I'd love to learn to play the guitar or drums. Maybe one day I will take up some lessons. Now I don't care for acoustic guitars that much, there has to be a certain noise level in it so to speak. If I may: Example. To be on a stage in front of thousands and play. It must be a rush. I might be a little too old to start now. Oh wel......

A wise musician once said to me, "Listen to everything you like, and play everything you can."

You may not be able to, or have the time, to play everything you like, but listening to a lot of music - different kinds and different things within the same kind - will help you play what you can.

Fretless!, John!...... Shocked... Shocked... Shocked...!

Have you ever practiced playing a "Fretless" Violin, or Cello?....Shocked...!

I did.....once.... Embarrassed...!

I would go for a Fender (or Squire) Jazz Bass Guitar.....with frets!!... Smiley...!

Don't forget you also need someone else to play the Lead and Melody parts!

(Drummers can be lonely folks as well)...Wink...!

F.... Cool...!

I had a couple of friends who were Drummers and Bass Players, and they were always desperate for me to go and accompany them in their homes, because without me playing the lead and melody part on keyboards or 6 string Guitar, etc...they were lost!

Percussionist; guilty as charged...

What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? A percussionist!

As a diversion from all those viola-player jokes.

LOL.... Grin...!

It really was a buggar...

The poor old Drummer and Bass player could do very little on their own, except accompany a music record or CD.....it always needed me to turn up to provide the Melody and Lead, for us to play "Live" music.
I felt so sorry for them...

...NAH!.. Wink.... Grin...!

Lol I've been playing guitar for 5 years, but I don't think I could ever switch to fretless. Its funny I've always said that I've been playing for three years, until a while ago when I noticed that I started the october I was in 2nd grade, and now its october and I'm in  7th grade Grin It's cool to be playing classical pieces though when my friends are still learning hot cross buns. I have a great admiration for anyone who can successfully play a fretless stringed instrument; Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, etc... Smiley...!

How they manage to quickly locate the desired note on the fretless fingerboard is beyond me... Shocked...!

I tried to master my Violin a few years ago, but after a lifetime of playing fretted instruments, I finally gave up, and fitted frets to the instrument, without much success... Cry...!
(Some early music violin-type instruments are fitted with frets, and bowed "under-hand" ).

My MIDI keyboards/synthesizers contain some fine examples of acoustic Bass and electric Bass instruments which are quite easy to play, with velocity applied... Smiley...!

Cheers all..

....carry on strumming...Wink...!

F....slapping my Bass... Cool...!

it does take some getting use to, but i think its worth the little extra practice, i can already play without constantly looking at the fret board, so when i play fretless i realy dont find it that much harder Smiley but ofcourse i miss the odd note hear and their

To answer your question about how we fin dour notes.

It's called a good ear and habit. After you play the instrument long you will eventually find the notes naturally. Wink

I can play violin and guitar and have recently started learning to play the piano. I listen mostly to bands such as the Eagles, Allman Brothers etc . I prefer to perform similar genres of music.

Hello Alonso...Wink...!

A popular instrument for all those musicians not suffering with infections of the nasal cavities.....

Percussionist; guilty as charged...

What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? A percussionist!

Micro, you, Rottydaddy and I have to go stay in the corner. We're just a bunch of percussionists. Embarrassed

Cool...!

Heh, your respect for them quickly fades when you have to accompany a string orchestra in a brasswind. It is quite difficult to play in tune with strings when they never play the same note with the same pitch...

As for me, I play the tuba, baritone horn, and trombone. With the Tuba and Baritone I play chamber and classical as well as 19th and 20th century wind ensemble music (Dello Joio, Sousa, ect.). With the trombone, it's all jazz.

As for what I listen to... classic rock.
