The one in the second link looks absolutely brilliant, nice going Nick.....

Reider

thx

The first one I removed all the atmosphere humidity and went to a very high altitude to show more of the scale and how well the fx blend in as the rays are extended. It would have looked a lot more realistic had I reduced the altitude a bit and more important, put in a proper weather theme.

The atmospheric content plays to the sun and the rays, as you can see in the second link.

NIckN:  my $9.95 is ready NOW.

Do you have a release date, and who will you market it through?

LOL

I dont need cash but donations to my gramdson's college fund are welcome

I will probably release the sun this weekend assuming all beta testers report back A-OK

The aircraft lights need a bit more TLC to get them locked down

just so you know, that streaking effect you have around the sun isn't "godrays", it's called a starburst, it's just a lense effect in real photography

godrays are actually crepuscular rays, they're true 3D beams of light caused by sunlight diffracting through a gap in the clouds and illuminating the air

starburst

...

godrays

...

but this is just semantics, the effect you've created is excellent

I understand the difference between volumetric lighting and lens flairs

In actuality light bloom is a lens flair and yes, part of what I created enhances that as well however that same volumetric lighting which you show in image 2 is simulated by the rays (see the sunset over the horizon image I posted http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1192741646 ) that’s not a lens flair. Note that the high light source is far enough past the horizon to not force a flair. The volume of light being projected away from the corona is being displayed because it is viewed through atmospheric content, just like the 2nd image you are showing.

When I started working with this I was leaning more toward the lens flair look but the final product has a much better volumetric lighing FX for sunrise and sunset, and, in certain conditions will give the illusion of volumetric rays in higher altitude clouds

The only thing missing is that FX can not be displayed past the sky textures and on the ground. There is a way to create volumetric lighting such as god-rays close to the ground but it requires modeling it and the problem is the control of it so it plays under the correct situation with the sun in the correct location/position. It would also create a hit on performance as adding anything like that would.

What my sun does is increase the corona show, adds in a simulated volumetric display under the right conditions and reduces the light bloom to a more natural and correct scale.

ah ok, I just assumed from the screenshots that you were going for a pure lense flare effect, it would probably be more clear to me to see it animated, it's cool that you're simulating the rays
