Ok, I've got my Teamspeak, I've got the server info, I've got a ____-load of aircraft in my hanger, and I can USUALLY take off and land without breaking anything. (usually) What's next? I've read this: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1089583712 How formal and procedure-oriented are multi-player sessions? Are they a rip it up and have fun kind of gig, or are they more for hardnosed, by the book "pilots"? I have read about people "crashing" (small pun intended) some sessions by blasting onto the scene and causing mid-airs and such, and let me assure you I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE! The last thing I would want to do it take away from someone's simulator fun. I tried to join a session this evening, and I frankly felt unprepared. (sorry Purplehaze515) Should I brush up on my piloting skills first?

Groundbound,

It depends on WHICH server you are flying and with WHICH group of pilots as to how "formal" things get.  Many times it can be VERY informal.

Places like VATSIM and IVAO are just about "real world" for realism.  If you can't fly it totally "by the book"....... be that GA book or the ATP book...... then that is not the place for you.  They pride themselves in re-creating the real world as literally as possible.  If you ever listen in to their ATC... sounds just like the RW ATC feeds on the net.  And the ATP pilots sound just as professional and skilled.

Then there are some FSHost servers on the net that are pretty much total free-for-alls.  Crazy places that pertty much anything can happen.  And everything in between.

Get a copy of FSHostSpy and you can see all the FSHost servers on the net at any one time.  There will usually be about 150 of them.  Each site has it's own "character".  Look around.

The SimV server is more toward the very informal end of things.  People are pretty laid back... and there rarely is any ATC happening even at a single airport.  Multi controllers things are NEVER happening there.  So mainly you announce intentions like flying non-towered real world GA..... and fly around.  Ramming, interfering with others, and other such crap like that are strongly FROWNED upon though.

From my experience they RARELY use Teamspeak there...... mainly they use the chat box function.  So all communications is text.   That is one of the reasons that I don't fly on there much.  HATE typing and flying when there is a perrfectly good and easy voice alternative available.

Saturdays and Sundays there are often organized "flight tours" ... look for the postings in this forum section.  join in, take some time watching others handling it, ... and you'll figure it out pretty quickly.

Yeah.... it is nice to be able to grease the landings online......... surprisingly, flying in front of real people/pilots tends to put the pressure on ....sweaty palms time....... but everyone has a good natured chuckle when things go wrong.  Not abusive..... just fun.

Check out the ports info at the top of this forum section so that you have that sorted ....and just give it a try.

best,

.....................john

Groundbound, you are more than welcome to fly on the server. Join one of the tours on Saturday or Sunday and have some fun. We don't mind that you are not a skilled pilot, everybody has to learn. As long as you can behave normally, without crashing into people on purpose, you can and will have a great time.

About teamspeak, the problem is that we are an international group of people. Not everybody speaks English that well or have a terrible accent. So typing is a bit easier than repeating your question or answer 5 times because nobody understood.......

Thanks for the replies. If I were to join a session as an observer, how would that work? Would I be on the ground watching the other players flying by, or would I be in some sort of spot or tower view mode and hanging with the aircraft?

Hello Groundbound1 Smiley
On simv you need not be groundbound anymore Please feel free to come fly anytime even if no one else is on because someone might see you flying and join you.
I fly online just about every time I fly just because it's so much more fun to fly with someone else.
If you see me flying online feel free to join and I will help you with anything I can.

If anyone is interested, I found some pretty useful freeware on Download.com today. A time zone conversion tool.

http://www.download.com/World-Time-Zones/3000-2124_4-10669839.html?tag=lst-0-1

It's VERY simple and light on resources.

I did have a question about FSHostSpy, why doesn't the SimV server show up (cockpit.netfrag.org-8090)? Or is it named something different?
