I've always noticed that, in Simviation Downloads.
Using my Firefox/IE in other sites, the total size if the download file is quoted at the start, also the time left to complete the download...
...!
( This was always vital for 56k Dial-up users).
In Sim V, the only way I know of the actual file size is when it is quoted in the download details by the Author...
I then have to estimate the completion time, by comparing the total size of the File with the bytes being downloaded at the time!
The Download "Progress Bar" doesn't appear!
..it just illustrates that a download is taking place!
Strange.....
...!

I think it depends on the version of the browser you use. I've noticed the same with Firefox 2.0.0.7 which is automatically updated to the latest version.
I'm still using IE6 which does show the download progress. I can't speak for IE7.
Both the above are downloads from SimV.

I'm on IE (i think 6 although I'm ashamed to say I'm not certain) and I get the download progress bar just fine. But I can't speak for firefox.
