"Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site *address*

Opeartion aborted"

First, I should explain that I'm using AOL 9.0. I know I shouldn't be using AOL but I'm stuck with it I'm afraid.  Cry I use Firefox to browse the internet so I don't get this problem, but my parents use the AOL software and they can't access any of the AOL pages (e.g: News, Chat, Shopping etc.) Other pages work fine. I've tried to get them to use Firefox instead but they're refusing. I spent most of last  night searching for a fix but didn't find anything and I'm not even going to try and ask AOL for support. I've recently uninstalled Comodo Personal Firewall so could that be something to do with it? If anyone can help at all then please please do! I'm getting alot of stick about this and the last thing I should be doing right now is trying to sort this so I'd be very grateful for any help.

Thanks

It's IE7 and the firewall is just called Comodo Personal Firewall. Website

A silly thought but have they cleared out all the history, cookies etc? Just IE is rather sensitive about this...

Use whatever software you like. I've used AOL for years with very few problems & far less than other ISPs I could mention.

I can't think why not. That would seem the obvious answer & would save you & your parents a lot of frustration. On the odd occasion I've needed them I've always found the online Help people very friendly & efficient.

Try uninstalling IE, and then re-install....

90% of the time either a complete re-install/reboot will fix most problems........

Give it a try anyway, won't take you that long Wink

Do as Ozzy said...clear the history, cookies, etc.  Last time I used Explorer I had the same problem.  Quick clean out and it was good to go again.

Convert your parents to FireFox...Make them read this:

Quote:
And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced.
But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird.
The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire
and thunder upon them. For the beast had been
reborn with its strength renewed, and the
followers of Mammon cowered in horror.

from The Book of Mozilla, 7:15

FireFox owns IE...'Nuff said Tongue Tongue

Done. Hasn't helped though I'm afraid. Re-installing IE is a good idea, but how do I do that? There is no 'repair' option in the add/remove programs menu.  Huh

I suspect the problem is with the AOL software & nothing to do with IE. Did you try AOL Technical Help as I suggested? If not, why not? Live Help costs nothing & could well fix your problem in a few minutes. http://help.aol.co.uk/contact-aol-broadband/article/20070705045809990001

PS. I typed 'firewall' in the AOL Help search box & it came up with this. http://help.aol.co.uk/are-you-using-firewall-software/article/200608020931099900...

Are you using firewall software?

Some personal firewall software configurations can restrict access to AOL. If you find that you are having persistent difficulties in connecting to AOL Broadband, it may be due to the presence of firewall software.

Classic symptoms of software conflict include web pages not displaying and the Buddy List failing to load. In the event of this happening, disable your firewall software and retry AOL. Before doing this, please ensure that you have your firewall software installation discs, as you may need to load this software again.

If you can connect when your firewall software is disabled, try changing the security settings on the software and signing on again to see if the problem is resolved. If you have lowered your security settings and still can't get online, please contact your firewall software vendor for further advice.

Try downloading the latest version of IE, and running the install file, when that runs there could be an option to remove the old one or repair.....

If not, google 'how to uninstall IE' then read the info on microsofts webpage, i found something earlier about how to uninstall if it does not appear in the add/remove programs list Wink

I did, they told me to re-install the software and clear the history and cookies which hasn't worked.

I uninstalled the firewall the day before this started happening. When it was still installed, it wasn't blocking AOL or IE and there were no problems.

I've just re-installed IE but that hasn't worked either.

In that case I would try reinstalling the firewall software.

Right, let's start from the beginning. I assume your parents are using the AOL browser to log on to the Internet. Are you saying that they cannot access the AOL site with that? If so, the problem is with the AOL software & nothing to do with IE or any other alternative browser. Why not swallow your pride & go back to the AOL Tech Help people. Tell them that their last suggestion didn't work. They are the ones most likely to have the answer.

Will do. By the way I have nothing against the AOL Live help people.

Edit: just finished the conversation with AOL live help. "This error occurs for two main reasons; if the USB cable is not plugged into the PC from the modem or if the drivers have not installed correctly." Surely, if that was the case I wouldn't have been able to talk to him in the first place??  Huh

Why didn't you tell them that? Ask them to suggest something else. Don't give up until you fix it.

PS. Did you check the USB cable? Maybe the problem is with your connection.

The cable appears to be fine, there certainly aren't any noticeable problems with the connection. I've just been doing some more searching and found that this problem is normally associated with errors in page coding. But that seems unlikely since others would surely be having the same problems? Just a thought...

OK but give the online Help people a chance. They can only go by what you tell them. Be as specific as you can about the problem. Stick to the facts & don't jump to conclusions. Try any suggestions they come up with even if they sound silly. It could be something very simple you hadn't even thought about.
