What is the best flap position for takeoff in a 747, CRJ700, any passenger jet. Is there a rule of thumb?

If you can't read that PDF file try updating Adobe Reader.

Press the F10 key. F10 will bring up the kneeboard. Find the reference chart for the aircraft by pressing the appropriate button on the kneeboard. Review the reference chart for the aircraft, it will tell you appropriate speeds, and flap settings for take-off as well as landings.
