I've noticed some of the FSX default aircraft have their gauges in their Panel folder instead of the "Flight Simulator X/Gauges" folder
when installing an addon plane it says copy the gauges into the "Flight Simulator X/Gauges" folder, is it possible to copy them instead to the panel folder of the plane? will they run ok in FSX if I do this? the reason I ask is because I like having the addon files all in one place so I can back it up more easily
also is a similar thing possible with the effects files?

Gauges, yes and it is the smart thing to do so you don't fill up the gauge folder with junk and if you decide to get rid of planes, all the files that would be left over in the gauge folder get cleaned out too because they are with the aircraft in the panel folder instead of the main gauge folder.
Effects, no, the only place those can go is in the Effects folder.

thanks for the quick reply, this is just what I wanted to hear, it's a shame about the effects but that one isn't too bad, the gauges is great because they really do fill up the folder with junk

what id od with effects is copy and paste the stuff in the normal microsoft flight simulator X/ effects/ folder but then i copy those into the aircraft folder.
when i want to get rid of those effects i copy and paste the effects in the aircraft folder and then paste them into the effects folder then they should be highlited and then i delete them
easy come easy go

Effects files are so small I don't see any advantage in removing them.

That is correct and when the sim scans at boot they do not take up megs in memory load so they are really of no consequence to clean out. Gauges on the other hand can fill up a system fast.
