That might figure into it, but it's more about the resonant properties of the plate. The fact that the plate is square, not round, has a lot to do with the patterns seen.
I'm assuming the plate is part of the transducer (speaker)...

Just what I was thinking about. This is really interesting stuff. I wounder what are the uses for this in the future. Grin

The salt has nothing to do with the patterns formed on the plate, it merely allows the nodes and antinodes of the plate to be seen.

The shape, material, and frequency are the only factors that contribute of any patterns formed. If you cause a plate to resonate by any means, it will have one of an infinite number of patterns visible, depending on the frequency at which it is resonating. The salt gathers on the nodes of the plate as that is where  the plate moves the least, and vacates the nodes, as that is where the plate moves the most.
