Hey Guys,   I'm wishing that you all have a nice day.

First I wish to express  my appreciation for your help in all my Questions.   Please bear with me as some questions appear to be asked over and over or in a different manner.   I'm not much  at doing what appears to be basics to others on the PC.  I'm just dense I suppose.

I just want my FSX to work as best as it can and would like to remove as many slow-downs on the PC without getting into things that are over my head.   I've read so many post about how to remove or disable things on my PC that there are times I mess-up the PC.   While "Nick" is really "with it" and sure is helpful to so many  - -  He's way over my head.   I just can't "get it".  Also, living in a remote area- - I have no one to turn to to ask anything if I mess-up.

I've just recently learned how to turn off my anti-virus and verify that it is indeed turned off.  I already see an improvement in my FSX.  What are  some other "tweaks" that can be done that don't require many pages of print being in my lap ?   I'm just not PC literate like so many.

Thanks again for your help,    caveman

One simple thing you can do is to turn off "file indexing" on your drive(s).
Many have found that doing so decreases FSX load times and it is not really nessary anyway on todays  fast systems.

To do so, open  My Computer> right click on a drive>  Properties> disable "file indexing service" by unchecking  the  box.

In doing so, you really can't screw up your sys and it's just a question of re-checking the box if you whish to re-enable it for whatever reason.

caveman,

The resource that NickN provides so freely to people here at SimV is the kind of info you'd pay dearly to get a consultant to share.  I know that at times it can seem overwhelming in it's complexity...... but it will be WELL worth your effort to try to figure out what and how...and work with the ideas he has put forth.

There are few (if ANY) on SimV that have his understanding... so for EVERYONE it is a stretch to comprehend what he is suggesting.  But the good part is that you do not have to understand all the why's and how comes...... you just have to follow his instruction to the "T".

I think that is an important point..... follow the instructions in the exact steps given and exactly as he says to do them.  You can get in trouble when YOU decide to shortcut or ignore something or change the order.  He lays it out very sequentially and pretty clearly.  Another good point is that there is no rush to get it ALL done.... bite it all off only one step at a time.  "The longest journey begins with a single step".

The results his "tweeks" get are generally astounding.

Perserverence and determination!

best,

....................john

JBaymore is right..but I understand the apprehension. I'm probably worse off than you, in that I know just enough, to give me just enough confidence, to really get into trouble Embarrassed

Here's a stragtegy that I'm planning for my next build. Two hard-drives, with their own Windows installations.. One for normal computing, and one for FSX only. For the FSX  install, Windows will have ALL un-needed services disabled, and it won't be so intimidating to slowly tweak the heck out of it, as I'll have the other drive for normal stuff.

If you have a retail copy of Windows, the extra install should be no problem.. so it's just a matter of another hard-drive, and they're pretty inexpensive..  Smiley

Hey Guys, wishing you a nice day,

I'm somewhat slow getting back to you, sorry - - - .   Staying busy now that the weather has cooled some.  The file indexing is more my speed when it comes to tweaking the PC.   Wink     Hey John, that's good advise you've given me.   I'm noted for taking things one step at a time and doing  exactly as instructed.   I'm very apprehensive about messing up and wish to understand what I'm doing.   I've found so much conflicting data in books and from repairmen that I'm a little bit gun-shy.   I always try to have a means of reversing what I'm into - -  just in case it fails or I've made a mistake.   That's sorta   what makes me tick.  I know I'm slow but also a  persistent student.   Smiley

Hey Brett, thanks for the info, you've read my mind so to speak. Shocked   I have two computers,  side by side that I can switch back and forth via a "KVM 2 port switch".  My wimpy, sorry PC, I use for on line, News, Mail, and storage for whatever.   The other PC is my "home-built"  AMD that is to always be upgraded as the money tree allows.

I sure do appreciate you Guys taking the time to help me.  Thanks so much.

     Have a good one,    caveman
