I am trying to use fern marques' airport beacon tower file, and I am not sure if I am setting it up right,
using it right or if the file may be corrupted.

I have the file "FS Connect" installed and it seems to be working right .
Please help

What version of 'airport_beacons_towers' did you download?

The manual version-in which you edit the .xml and compile, or...
The Rwy12 library version, or...
The EZ-Scenery library version.

'Beacon_readme' explains it but can be a little confusing if you're not familiar with the process. Here are the steps I use:

*Setup: unzip 'Airport_Beacon_Towers.zip' to your desktop. Open the Airport_Beacon_Towers folder. Copy the .bmp's from  ..\Textures\ to the FS9 \Texture\ folder, and the .fx from \Effects\ to the FS9 \Effects\ folder.

*Start the sim and slew your aircraft so it is centered at the location for the new tower.

*Obtain the coordinates of your aircraft: Though you could use the coordinates directly from the sim, the 2 place decimal is only accurate to about 18m. The readme explains how to use the included ObjectPlacer program to get the coordinates...... I use Afcad- Start Afcad, open the airport your at, and position the  pointer  on the aircraft crosshairs. Read coordinates of the pointer from the Info bar at the bottom of the Afcad screen. After you write down the coordinates, you can close Afcad and the sim.

*Open the 'Airport_Beacon_Towers' folder and inside it open the 'BGLCOMP_SDK' folder1. Decide what tower variation you want to use (consult the readme for descriptions). The 'H2' is the nicest. (There are only 4 tower variation file sets present in the BGLCOMP_SDK folder, you can copy the other 2 sets in from the main folder)

*Edit the .xml file for the tower using notepad: Carefully replace the 'lat=' and the 'lon=' values with the values you wrote down. Be careful you don't remove the " marks. Leave out the * and ' characters. You should end up with something like this:

lat="N46 11.9311"          note the space between degrees and minutes
lon="W91 14.7136"         the 4 place decimal will get you within 1m

Save the .xml file. DO NOT rename it.

*Drag the .xml file and drop it onto 'bglcomp.exe'. After a few seconds a new .bgl file should appear. Example; 'Airport_beacon_tower_H2.bgl'.  You can rename the .bgl file to something meaningful like 'KHYR_beacon.bgl', and move the file to the sim, either to the Addon Scenery\scenery\ folder or to your project's ...\scenery\ folder.

Your tower should appear the next time you start the sim.

Dave

1 You can clean up the BGLCOMP_SDK folder if you like. The only required files are the .xml and .mdl files for the tower variation(s) you want to use, and 'bglcomp.exe' and 'bglcomp.xsd'.
