Oh.. absolutely...
That's a goal... something to work up to.. I'm always professing, "one step at a time".. Heck .. you have to be able to navigate and shoot a VOR approach in broad daylight, just trying to learn the concepts, in perfect weather before even THINKING about this stuff.. You gotta be able to enter a pattern and land flawlessly on reflex before even getting to the navigation part..

After over ten years since I began flying the MSFS, I still havn't become proficient in instrument approaches. I can somewhat follow an ILS glideslope down through the overcast/clouds, but I still don't understand VOR approaches, missed approaches, and approach plates well.
I can fly, and navigate on instruments in IFR conditions without any problems, but I just never took the time to correctly learn instrument approaches

Aint it great ? A never-ending, learning thing...
If it's something you want to learn, a great tool sits in front of you.
Many months can pass before I'll find myself flying REAL IMC. There's a difference between filing IFR, because the ceilings might be low, somewhere en-route... and filing (and flying) an entire flight where you don't see anything
I promise you that MSFS has made me more competent and confident when it's just me and and an instrument panel...

Brett,
That was an amazing post! I'm quite new to radio navigation / nonprecision approaches. I bought Jeppesen Simcharts and found them great for Airport charts (inc parking/taxing), Departure and Approach charts. However, I was missing some proper sectional charts but after reading your post I realise the FSX map and a notebook will do the trick!
Thanks,
Aleks

Sectional charts are easy to get. Go to your local airport and ask some of the local pilots for their outdated charts. That's what I did before I started flying, and after I started flying and working towards my PPL, I've been accumulating my own outdated charts...

Yeah.. my MSFS "library" is made up mostly of outdated, low-altitude IFR charts.
For real flying, $8 for a chart you'll use once is no big deal, but it's silly to keep your sim-library current and full.
Also.. this is a great site for planning flights...

Thanks guys for allyour replies, and especially yours Brett, but to be truthful i didnt understand a word.
As you have proberly guessed i am really new to this, i mean really new all i know is that a plane flys in the sky if you get where i am coming from.
But seriously i really want to try and get on with the game, but i am getting frustrated as i dont know what i should concentrate learing on.

It can be a little overwhelming. It was for me once upon a time, and still is when it comes to certain areas.
I suggest starting with the lessons in FS. It's a starting point, and will help teach the basics. If you need help understanding anything, we're here to help.

For now.... Work on controlling the plane precisely and confidently. You need to get all the interactions into your subconscious... pitch, roll, heading, altitude, airspeed..... you need to know how and why to deploy flaps.. how to bleed off airspeed.. how to hold altitude exactly... how to hold headings.. how to adjust for a cross-wind...
I don't mean for that to sound overwhelming.. and it will make sense. The lessons that come with the sim have their issues, but they are very helpful in drilling fundementals. Work your way through them, even as they get frustrating. Get your hands on a good ground-school book, too. Immerse yourslef into it like you were taking real lessons.... and be patient.
To fly even a sim plane for an hour while you can't see past the prop.. and then guide it precisely down to a runway means you have to be able to do most of the flying, without having to think about it. You'll have your hands full during a procedure turn and when trying to make it a standard rate(knowing why a standard rate turn is important), timed turn WHILE you're in a controlled descent AND trying to hold a constant airspeed..
Baby steps and patience
Stick with small and slow 172... Blasting around in a big, fast jet will just throw your timing off.
