If you haven't found out yet, convert all your songs to AAC in iTunes, will double your iPod capacity.
My 2 cents

What about quality loss, you are after all compressing compressed data?

meh, I still have 10Gb left
My tip....turn down the screen brightness.....saves so much battery life, and at half it doesn't look particularly different to full

My iPod is also 2-years old and I'm happy with it... it seems that it has not lost battery capacity, as I can stay for 4 days listening to it regularly and w/o charging...
I don't know about AAC... most of my MP3s are at 320kbps and quality may be lost...

My 2003 Ipod died. It has a battery life of about 3 minutes.
Now I have an 80 GB video.

another tip for ipod users who have gotten the frowny face before and not been able to get it to work?
I kid you not, take it and smack it up against a hard table or floor, 9 times out of ten it will start looking, happened numerous times with my girlfriends
