What software do i need to get to start designing?

Check the Design Faq and here is a link to the SDKs. Make sure to check out the Idiots guide to Gmax very imformative. Its what I used when starting.

Be sure to download the 3d freeware program Gmax 1.2 from the Faq.
You will also need DXT bitmap from MW graphics for texture conversion. You may also want to invest in a Paint program after you have ventured aways into the designing process for better looking textures and ease of painting.
