What do you mean? Are you trying to find servers through the in-game browser thingy?? Or are you trying to connect to some sort of network/organization/VA?

Hallo DT,
Glad to see there is another person interested in the multi-player aspects of FS. I am pretty new to using those functions of the game, but my dad and I have been having a blast trying it out lately. OK, let's take a look at your question.
First, don't be surprised if this thread gets moved to the multi-player forum. There is a specific forum for all multi-player threads regardless of which FS version you use. Don't worry; the people in that forum are very knowledgeable when it comes to these issues and will be the people most likely able to help you. You aren't being relegated to some dark corner of nowhere land.
This may also be a good opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with the multi-player forum. If you are looking for other people to play with, this is a good place to let others know what, when, and where you want to fly. It is also a good place to find out what your fellow simmers are up to and when you can expect to see them online in multi-play.
Secondly, SimV has it's own server for FS2004 multi-play. You can find all the details on how to connect to this server in the multi-player forum I mentioned above. If you follow all the directions and get connected though don't see anybody on, it may just mean that, well, nobody is on. At this point, I would go back to what I mentioned above, and either let people know when you want to fly or find out when people are going to fly and meet them then.
Best of luck. Who knows, maybe we might see each other around on multi-play.
All the best from another person learning the ropes,
~Darrin

Basically what you need to do is go down to the Multiplayer forum and find the thread about the simv server. An IP adress will be listed. Copy the IP and paste it in the I.P. box in the multiplayer window of FS, THEN hit search and the session should show up!

As far as I am aware, Stand-alone FS2004 cannot actively "search" for servers. There used to be "The Zone" I believe it was called, but that was shut down if I remember correctly.
With Stand-alone FS2004, to find a server you have to type in a valid IP address,
then
click "Search".

I was on the SimV server flying from KSFO to KRNO last night. No one else was on in that time though.
Of the gazillions of people worldwide that own fs2004 or FSX...... a TINY fraction use the multiplayer aspects. So that makes the multiplayer environment pretty darn lonely most of the time unless you are flying in an organized "tour" or a pre-arranged setup with some friends. Just a "fact of life".
It is too bad, really. Multiplayer is a lot of fun. The SimV server is, unfortunatey, VERY underutilized.
Look for the "Tours" listed here in the multiplayer forum section (yup, Xyn_air... moved
). That will help you find a time that some of the forum "regulars" are on flying on that server.
If you are really into multiplayer..... and are a "die hard" about it....... you tend to gravitate toward VATSIM or IVAO. VATSIM is the bigger of the two, I think. There, at any given time 24/7, you are likely to find maybe a few hundred planes in the air and 50 -70 controllers on.
BUT.....(there is always a "but")....... VATSIM strives for a level of realism that is about equal to the real world. SO... don't go on there until you KNOW what you are doing to at least the PPL level or very close to that. And if you aren't close to a real ATP in RL....... don't show up in a commercial airliner. It is NOT a "hop on and fly around without a care in the world" type place. You'll find live ATC that will remind you of listening to real world ATC audio feeds on the Internet. Crisp and professional.....and expecting you to be too.
There are also other slightly less serious places like ESkyWorld and WestCoastATC. They have scheduled multiplayer flights that have controllers on in certain places from time to time. Otherwise they are free flight servers.
Then there is the "workhorse" multiplayer search program called "FSHostSpy". Go get it. When you run it, it shows every FSHost multiplayer session on the Net at the moment, and how many people are flying and where and what they are flying and so on. Maximizes your chance to find a busy session.
Hope this helps.
best,

How do people become for example ATC pilots or co-pilots?

If you are flying on-line for the first time...???...then just get used to the normal Multiplay Session joining in with other Flyers...
The complicated "stuff" comes later!
...start SIMPLE...!

Hey! We can do co-piloting (share aircraft) in FS2004? Cool! I thought I could only do that with either an add-on or in FSX.
