I can't remember the USMC pilots name but they had a program about it on Spektrum (the Hungarian answer to Discovery) the other night and it was really good. Only reason I was watching it was 'cos my father-in-law wanted to watch it as he is in love with the Harrier since seeing one at Kecskemet airshow 4 years ago Shocked

He'd been an engineer in the communist times on aircraft and loved flying so when I told him I'd got tickets for the big airshow that was it, we were off and he'd never seen an aeroplane fly backwards or sideways before Cool

There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

Meaning we all know precisely what the result of that big order that's coming from BA in september will be... Roll Eyes

Seen the Harrier fly a few times myself during various farnborough airshows (I live pretty much next to the airfield, and make a point of going every year it's on Cheesy

). I have to agree that they're absolutely spectacular... not least because of the noise... Shocked

I swear, if I ever see an F-35B displaying it's VTOL capabilities (and afterburner in normal flight), I may have to gouge out my eardrums... Grin

Alas at Yeovilton this year they only had a mock-up of the 35 to show. I'm personally not that impressed with it and think that the Harrier is still the better aircraft! But as I don't work for the MoD I can't affect policy decisions. At least it'll have a kick-bottom British engine to power it Wink

I kinda like the F-35 - it's looks for starters I really love... gives an impression of agility and beautiful complexity, yet also extremely rugged and tough and generally versatile.

Then there's the fact that it's part-British - not just the engine, which I believe is Rolls-Royce (please correct me if I am wrong) but also major parts of the rear fuselage and I believe the wings are being built by BAE systems. That's always a plus in my books. Grin

And finally, the fact that it's continuing the tradition of the Harrier, but improved.

I've also mentioned in other forums that I'm really keen on the new British aircraft carriers. Since the F-35's going to be equipping said carriers, how can I not like it? Grin

Gotta agree on that one... the Vulcan beats anything except the spitfire and concorde and a couple of other warbirds. Cheesy

But I still like modern fighters... F-22, F-35, Typhoon, Tornado, F-15, F-16, Gripen, and so on... the only really modern one I truly dislike is the Rafale.

Britain built a great plane and we Marines love it!!

Done plenty of training exercises with the Royal Marines too and I gotta tell you, I have never had so much fun at a bar than when those guys are there haha the stories I came home with...

Yeah....

Ah well, there's always the typhoon, which I love, and I also enjoy the commercial jet displays (surprisingly).

I'll miss the harrier when it goes, though.... I hope someone sees fit to preserve one.
