Simviation Forum - Worth going from Diskeeper to Ultimate defrag?

Hi, I'm new here so first of all hello!

I currently use diskeeper pro to defrag my machine and it seems to be doing what it should. But after reading about people using ultimate defrag, I was thinking maybe i should switch?

I don't have any knowledge about what files should go where etc. But I assume the program takes care of things like that? I am getting stutters as I fly, and I guess it's HDD access that is causing it. I use a sata hard drive, and the fastest one I could buy at the time. However, I think my main stumbling block may be that my main drive is partitioned, so will ultimate defrag be able to do exactly what is needed to get files in the correct places?

I hope someone can shed some light on this. Much obliged for any answers.

I have always used windows defreag. I have never tested it against any other programs but it seemes to do the job. The defrag works on the "raw" data level. It does move files but what it does is it moves all of the data as close to the center of the disk so everything is compact on the disk physically. It also should move chunks around I. E. If plane.bmp is in 4 blocks on the hard drive and 1 chunk is one one platter, the other is on the other platter and the remaining two are scattered randomly it takes a lot of work to find each chunk and send it through. What a defrag should do is put plane.bmp's chunks all right next to eachother or close to that way seek time is much faster.

Ultimate Defrag or O&O Defrag versions 8 or 8.5. Do not use O&O version 10.0

What you are after is the file system NAME defrag

Ultimate defrag requires a higher learning curve and the user must understand what they are doing or you can move the wrong files to the wrong place making things worse.

I think if you check the end of that thread NickN said he was looking into Ultimate Defrag and would post a setup and use list after he figures out the best way to use the program.

Well, after using the bufferpools tweak I have to say that I'm not getting any stutters at all anymore so can sit back and have a good thorough read of the various defrag tools before making a choice as to what would be best suited. Obviously as I add missions and scenery I'll still be needing to defrag and keep the game running tiptop. But at the moment at least I can enjoy a stutter free game

actually, when I think of Nick, I still think of Sylvester...

anyway, I use UltimateDefrag. It is really great, and resonably easy to use. it gives you a graphics representation of your hard disk, and lets you place high-performance programs on the outer rings, and other programs, after that...
