I watched a history Channel program about this weapon, and accuracy was the one thing in demonstration after demonstration it lacked. Also when fired on fully automatic, it could prove to be a problem, however in what could be called muzzle to muzzle combat, it was/is the winner. Saying that being in front of a 7.62mm lump of lead in any situation is going to give you a very bad day. Over to you Andrew.

True, I wouldn't want to be hit with a 7.62x39 round, but that's why I wear an IBA for some protection. But they don't want to be hit with my 5.56, 7.62x52 or .50 cal rounds either... Grin
IED's are more effective at taking us out, and they know it, so they don't shoot at us often

Like a G-36? Grin

An HK G-36 would be cool. It's expensive, and I hate the 5.56 round, but otherwise, it's still seems like a good weapon.

I am going to look into building a G3 rifle. It shoots the 7.62 round; it's got a longer and legal barrel, It's extremily accurate, It's a semi auto, Magazine fed, and it can be used as an assault rifle or a short-medium range sniper/hunting rifle. What's not to like? Grin

According to Wikipedia, a G3 weighs approx 9.7 pounds with a loaded magazine. Also according to Wikipedia, my M-16 weights 8.5 pounds with a loaded magazine. I don't know if my CCO makes it any heaver, but the rail system with a surefire light, and a fore grip added a few more pounds.

What's wrong with an all metal magazine?

That's no problem. I've only used plastic mags once when shooting paint sim rounds. There aren't any ammo sight holes in my M-16 mags, and unless you count your shots, or load tracer rounds at the top, middle, and bottom of the magazine, there's no way to see how many rounds there are left. So I keep shooting untill the bolt locks to the rear... Wink

Kind of a disadvantage in the middle of a firefight.

The G36's mags are made of semitransparent plastic, so you always know how much ammo is in it.

True, but hey, if you train to work around it, and you're used to it, and it's all you've ever known, it's not too bad... Wink

When gaming, the conventional wisdom is to change to a full clip before you enter the fray.  I imagine that same advice applies to reality as well.  Can you speak to that?

Of course this applies to reality as well, nonetheless is keeping track of your ammo quite important.

Of course, but an open magazine allows dirt to get in and foul up the works.  I don't know if the risk of a fouled-up magazine is worth being able to see the rounds.
