Thatch Weave

...

What's good and what's bad, don't hold back.  If you have any techniques i can use to improve, they would be much appreciated.

The idea is good and I love the highlight on the canopy, but all the action is in the lower half of the picture.

I like that. The only thing I can say is the entire aircraft should be shown and not just part of it.

Thanks guys.
Sytse, the reason for the action at the bottom is that i recorded the mig too high so that when i was setting up the final a/c i couldn't pan the camera down without losing the mig.  I probably should have taken the time to reset it up.
I tried including the entire f86 in the shot, Matt, but i thought there was more action if i had the sabre flying right in front of the "camera" and getting cut off.  Perhaps that wasn't the case.

I quite like it. No criticism at all. Immelman, I understood your idea of the Sabre flying in front of the camera, and I think its best that only part is shown. Wink

I like it. I am terrible with the recorder, but I am glad to see that you can effectively use it.  Wink

it'd have been easier to understand if the mig'd have been closer. it actually look like a cross in the background and I understood what it was after reading your explanations.
I'm not expert but trying to make the picture self-explanatory is a key...

otherwise great everything!!

that makes no sense considering how only a very small part of the plane is missing. i like it

but like others said, its kinda hard to figure out whats going on unless their is an explanation cos of the size of the mig

I like the shot.  I think maybe adding smoke trails to each Saber would go a long way toward making the shot work.  Those aircraft back then put out black smoke like it was going out of style.  A trail from each would show the "weave" part of the thatch weave maneuver.

That's a pretty good idea.  I don't have much experience with smoke, but I should try it.  It would definitely show the weave.

Looks like a nearly overcast sky, but the shot in general looks a bit dark and gloomy, a bit of a brighter surrounding would have been better for me. But that couldn't be helped much since it's non-edited (I think)... and my other nit-pick... at that altitude I would have some autogen and scenery on... In general, a really good shot... nice composition overall and the positions of the craft are fine with me... Wink

This one is edited, I used some dodge and burn, and i lowered the saturation, wich is why it looks a little gloomy.  I was trying to make the colors a little more realistic.

I like it, though I see no explanation and I'm not exactly sure what's going on. I know from the comments that behind is a MiG but why you would be weaving in front of it I'm not sure...the hills in the background look good, the land in the foreground a bit bleh...the planes and their positioning are fine by me. Very good hectic feeling of speed!

The thatch weave is a defensive maneuver used when two wingmen are under attack by other enemies with the advantageous position.  The two planes will weave in and out crossing behind the other plane alternately.  If and enemy tries to pull in behind one of the planes he will soon have his target's wingman directly on his six.  In this way two aircraft in a bad situation can fend off an ememy with the advantage.
Does that help clear anything up?  It's kinda hard to describe without visuals.

Well the visual is in this pic.. It's not about the Mig it's about the manouver which imo you've shown really well...   The pic is really good but compositional wise you shouldn't have clipped the F-86 with the border being as that is what the pic is about (There's plenty of room on the right of the shot left unfilled).

The skin on these birds is very shiney and more highlights would give more definition to both the lead plane and the wingman..

BTW the canopy work is tops and the mood is very fitting and as it is I think you've done a grand job.

Tjw2, what is it with you and dropping the tanks? Besides, this is not combat flight simulator, you cannot drop them.
