The rumor is that 8 will be the way to go.  One popular theory is that The Aircraft companies have realized that 8 is lucky in Asian culture

I know this is widely accepted throughout aviation but I find it rather bemusing.. Would an Asian carrier honestly choose one aircraft over another purely based on a number 8 being included in its name?

If Boeing make a flying brick that burns 1 tonne of fuel every Minute and carries 4 passengers, and is named the Boeing 888 are they going to choose that over something with better fuel burn, simply because of the number 8?

I'm sorry but I think that this number 8 business is bullcrap quite rather.

If there were 2 identical aircraft, with exactly the same specs, it would seem marginally more believable but other than that I'm not buying it...

Alex

True..... however, if the 8_8 naming scheme is open to boeing to use, why not? If it signify's luck in Asian culture, it's a kind of 'bonus' to go along with the quality of the actual aircraft...

I mean, it's not as if it costs them extra to use an 8 or two in an aircraft's name....

zero in middle is reserved for Peugeot (really... they bought the rights for a 3 position number with a zero in the middle). They were too late for the 707, but just in time for the Porsche 901 (which became the Porsche 911)

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

okay, boeing 817 through 897... still good.

I still think that 807 would sound better when attributed to a boeing than to a... *gulp*... peugeot...

I was hoping they'd use alphabets kinda like the did with the 787...I thought 7E7 sounded alot cooler and a regular number...Think about it...7A7, 7B7, 7C7 etc etc all the way to 7Z7...That's 26 different models right there... Cheesy Wink

It's the same with Airbus...What are they gonna do after that A390...Although these guys still have A360, A370 left to do...By the way, not all Boeing civilian jets ended with 7's...There was the Boeing 720 which lasted for a couple of years before eventually being replaced by the 707 Wink

The 720 was actually a derivitive of the 707.  I don't see them using the letter system.  ITs a good idea but I dont see it happening.
