The Honours List is actually decided by the PM nowadays. The monarch has little input except for wielding the sword as appropriate. (Think I read somewhere that Her Maj doesn't do that any more.) Petitions are a new gimmick of our current PM, Mr B Liar. Government by petition. I ask you. Roll Eyes

It's odd to me that they've "democratized" even that tradition.
I think bestowing those honors is a perfect task for a monarch in a parliamentary system... A good monarch should have a feel for who's popular, and it's not like they give them land with the title anymore or anything. Grin

I have always loved Maiden, and think they are one of the best metal bands in history but "Britain's most successful ever rock band."?

I don't know about that there are many bands from that area could would probably wear that crown, The Beatles come to mind.....
