I tried to connect but failed again about 20 times. No router but Thompson DSL modem. So have fun on your flights, chaps. I'll try again somewhere in the future. For now I'm off to that other serious server.

I noticed crash and TSC both showing up and disappearing on the FSHost notices a bunch of times as we were enroute.  I figured that someone already logged on did not have their ports open correctly.   I was there when the only one online for the tour in addition to me was bonair.  Got on early for a change.  Most everyone else joined after the two of us.

OH... but there were also two folks flying somewhere else at a UK airport ....... I can't remember the names.

And Fozzer, it is not a probelm caused by the router for the router USER....... it is a problem for anyone connecting via ANY method if someone ALREADY connected has ports not opened.

best,

It beats me...

I just have a simple DSL Modem connected directly into my 'phone line, and I can't recall ever getting thrown out of any flight, whether I join first, or later in the flight....

I just dial the Server's Address, and use his recommended Port address.

Been doing this for years now, with no problems...same on WSP's Site..

Same here...... DSL modem connected directly to the lines.

I thought you had a DIAL UP modem not DSL?  SAY............  Shocked .......... that DSL modem almost for sure has ports that have to be opened TOO!  I had to do that on mine.

Check that out.......... it is just like a ROUTER in that respect.

Fozzer,

Mine is plugged direct into the phone lines, autodetects and so on for BASIC use also........ but I still had to deal with the ports issue.  Maybe usb is different than Ethernet DSL modems in that regard?  Did you call your ISP about the need (or lack thereof) to open ports for online gaming use?

Well as far as I know you don't need to open a port on a DSL modem (USB version). Don't know about ethernet models though. I do open the right port in FS using Client settings. Port 23456 is open so it should work. I connected two days ago without any problem. Mind you there was no one online at that time. I connected with WSPilots servers several times yesterday evening, switching to Sam's server trying to find out what was wrong. All WSPilots servers went without a glitch while it was also busy there.

Oh well, I'll try again next week. In the mean time I'm flying the world tour on WSPilots.

Later,

Hello Chums....

...Continuing the Dreaded Port Saga...

Contacted my Service Provider this morning for advice on "Port Opening" and they informed me that all their necessary Ports for on-line gaming are all open, (which is normal).

My Thomson 330 USB ADSL Modem (Supplied by my ISP) is connected directly to my 'Phone line, with no Router installed.

It does not require any Port Opening to be carried out, (there are no software provisions for it), and it only applies to Modems which contain a Router, (whether wireless or not), or computers systems which contain a separate Router in addition to the Modem.

Note that reading the FAQ in FS Host's help file states that the most common cause of members being disconnected during game play, is either because there are too many players on line and there is insufficient band width to cope with them all.....
...or...
One or more of the players have their "Frame Rate" set too high.

For on-line Multiplayer gaming, the frame rate must be locked at no more than 20 Frames Per Sec (FPS).
Any higher or unlimited FPS requires excessive band width, and Players will be disconnected automatically to allow the system to function smoothly.

SO...!!

Menu > Options > Settings > Display > Hardware > Target Frame Rate > lock at 20 FPS...!

A thorough check on my setup seems to fully comply with all the above.... Smiley...!
...thank goodness...Wink...!

Cheers all...!

Paul....G-BPLF.... Cool...!

See now that is some helpful information I never knew. So not only it's about ports it's also about FPS. Good to know. Changing my settings from 24 FPS to 20 FPS.

Thanks Paul.

Paul,

Interesting thing about the usb dsl modems.  My Actiontek DSL modem DOES have ports that needed to be addressed ... but is just called a "modem".

You'll find that 20fps info on speed on most FSHost flight server's information pages.

Been running at locked 20 for a long time........ all the time,....even offline.  Based on NickN's advice about how to get the best performance.  In fact had that discussion online (via chat!) with someone last night on the SimV server.

Glad that is not the issue.

best,

It would seem that many of the "Starter Packs" for low end <2 Mmps Broadband users (like me), a cheap, simple USB-powered, ADSL, Plug-and-Play Modem is supplied.

For High speed, 8 Mbps Broadband, a more expensive, often Wireless, ADSL Modem+Router is supplied, and in this case, attention has to be made to open the Router Ports for on-line gaming.

Paul....<2 Meg Broadband....Win XP.... Cool...!

My actual Broadband speed is 1.1 Mbps!.... Embarrassed...!

The best I do in each on-line Multiplayer session is to take the risk and open my Windows Firewall...Wink...!

Jimbo,

Not exactly your problem.... so no need to apologize.  Mainly inherent to Microsoft's simulation, FSHost's software, and the fact that users have "personal discretion" as to configurations of their own systems.

Unless, of course, you'd like to take responsibility for all of that stuff.  In which case.... apology accepted.   Wink

It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things

It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things

If we'd thought a bit before the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot not to cool down

So good-bye, dear, and amen
Here's hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things

Hi there,

Well this sounds like the usual port problem.
There is unfortunately not much we can do about. We canīt even do a port scan
cause UDP Ports donīt give you a feedback when connecting
unlike TCP ports. So all I can tell you again is... "make sure your ports are open, make sure
youīr firewall is configured correctly (or off), make sure you donīt have FSInn running in the background!!!!!!!!".

In very rare cases I experienced the same behaviour even when people
are connected who definitely  have their ports open (like .. just xabbu and me beeing on the server).

Sometimes FS Muliplayer is just mysterious Smiley

Gilbert the maker of FSHost once gave his best to explain the FS Port system to me Smiley .

Quote:
You asked about using other ports like 23457 and 8, and why you can sometimes connect on those ports as well.  When FS2004 (or FSHostClient for FSX, it works the same as FS2004) connects to a session, it actually tries to connect on two ports: 23456 and the "alternate DirectPlay port" 6073.  If it can't find a session on 23456, it usually finds it on 6073, and the host then replies back from 23456 anyway.  From that point on, they usually switch to 23456, but if all else fails they sometimes switch to a random port in the range of 2302 to 2400.  So let's say you tried connecting on 23457, or even something crazy like 33457.  Since nothing on the host side is listening to that port, the request to that port will be ignored.  But FS2004 still tries the default port 23456 anyway, and it still tries the alternate port 6073 as well.  So it's trying three ports now.  And the host will usually answer on 23456 either way, and they'll settle on that port.  The point I'm making here is that you can actually try on any port you want, because FS2004 will still try 23456 and 6073 in addition to whatever port you pick, and one of those will usually work.  And since nothing on the host side is listening to 23457 or 33457, there's no reason to forward those ports.

So as you can see.. itīs not that easy to figure out what exactely went wrong.... in cases a player canīt connect.

What you can try is to connect to port 23457 wich will not be found on our server. So FS than might try to use an
alternative port wich may work (or not).

This also helps in case you get you get kicked from the server by our intrusion detection system
wich means the session will close and you donīt find it anymore in your MP window. Doesnīt happen often but it does happen.
(not your fault, nothing you can do about, nothing we can do about cause our head admin is not going to change this)

I wish it was easier Smiley

cheers,

sam
