I thought you had a DIAL UP modem not DSL?  SAY............  Shocked .......... that DSL modem almost for sure has ports that have to be opened TOO!  I had to do that on mine.

Fozzer,

Mine is plugged direct into the phone lines, autodetects and so on for BASIC use also........ but I still had to deal with the ports issue.  Maybe usb is different than Ethernet DSL modems in that regard?  Did you call your ISP about the need (or lack thereof) to open ports for online gaming use?

Well as far as I know you don't need to open a port on a DSL modem (USB version). Don't know about ethernet models though. I do open the right port in FS using Client settings. Port 23456 is open so it should work. I connected two days ago without any problem. Mind you there was no one online at that time. I connected with WSPilots servers several times yesterday evening, switching to Sam's server trying to find out what was wrong. All WSPilots servers went without a glitch while it was also busy there.

Oh well, I'll try again next week. In the mean time I'm flying the world tour on WSPilots.

Later,

Hello Chums....

...Continuing the Dreaded Port Saga...

Contacted my Service Provider this morning for advice on "Port Opening" and they informed me that all their necessary Ports for on-line gaming are all open, (which is normal).

My Thomson 330 USB ADSL Modem (Supplied by my ISP) is connected directly to my 'Phone line, with no Router installed.

It does not require any Port Opening to be carried out, (there are no software provisions for it), and it only applies to Modems which contain a Router, (whether wireless or not), or computers systems which contain a separate Router in addition to the Modem.

Note that reading the FAQ in FS Host's help file states that the most common cause of members being disconnected during game play, is either because there are too many players on line and there is insufficient band width to cope with them all.....
...or...
One or more of the players have their "Frame Rate" set too high.

For on-line Multiplayer gaming, the frame rate must be locked at no more than 20 Frames Per Sec (FPS).
Any higher or unlimited FPS requires excessive band width, and Players will be disconnected automatically to allow the system to function smoothly.

SO...!!

Menu > Options > Settings > Display > Hardware > Target Frame Rate > lock at 20 FPS...!

A thorough check on my setup seems to fully comply with all the above.... Smiley...!
...thank goodness...Wink...!

Cheers all...!

Paul....G-BPLF.... Cool...!

See now that is some helpful information I never knew. So not only it's about ports it's also about FPS. Good to know. Changing my settings from 24 FPS to 20 FPS.

Thanks Paul.

Paul,

Interesting thing about the usb dsl modems.  My Actiontek DSL modem DOES have ports that needed to be addressed ... but is just called a "modem".

You'll find that 20fps info on speed on most FSHost flight server's information pages.

Been running at locked 20 for a long time........ all the time,....even offline.  Based on NickN's advice about how to get the best performance.  In fact had that discussion online (via chat!) with someone last night on the SimV server.

Glad that is not the issue.

best,

It would seem that many of the "Starter Packs" for low end <2 Mmps Broadband users (like me), a cheap, simple USB-powered, ADSL, Plug-and-Play Modem is supplied.

For High speed, 8 Mbps Broadband, a more expensive, often Wireless, ADSL Modem+Router is supplied, and in this case, attention has to be made to open the Router Ports for on-line gaming.

Paul....<2 Meg Broadband....Win XP.... Cool...!

My actual Broadband speed is 1.1 Mbps!.... Embarrassed...!

The best I do in each on-line Multiplayer session is to take the risk and open my Windows Firewall...Wink...!

Jimbo,

Not exactly your problem.... so no need to apologize.  Mainly inherent to Microsoft's simulation, FSHost's software, and the fact that users have "personal discretion" as to configurations of their own systems.

Unless, of course, you'd like to take responsibility for all of that stuff.  In which case.... apology accepted.   Wink

best,

As John said Jimbo, it's not your fault, so you don't need to apologise or try to solve it - it's just one of those things.  Smiley

Of course, if you don't get it sorted pronto then I'll break your f*****g legs!!! ...

It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things

It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things

If we'd thought a bit before the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot not to cool down

So good-bye, dear, and amen
Here's hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things

.....With thanks to Cole Porter...

...and the Flight Sim Servers...Wink...!
