Well, I picked up a Gateway with Dual Core running at 2 x 2.8Ghz, 2 x 2 Meg Level 2 cache,  800MHz FSB, 1 Gig DDR2.  I then slapped a Geforce 7600 GS with 512 Meg DDR.  I thought I was ready to rock with online gaming.  All I got was stuttering instead.  I made sure all my drivers were up to date.  Still no improvement.  Lagging big time.  So I did some research.  The best explaination I found on the net has to do with Vista TCP/IP stack.  It's more robust....read, more bloated!  It's the Vista TCP/IP stack!  I went to the Microsoft site for some technical help, and after doing a search, MS is silent on the subject!  Vista sucks for online gaming!  So if you are a gamer, resist upgrading to Vista.  Since the MOBO of my old computer crapped out, I had no choice but to get Vista when I bought this computer!

Angry Angry Angry Angry

Search the internet, Vista sucks for everything.

By the way, you can go to a local computer shop and ask them to put a rig together with XP, not Vista.

A local computer shop couldn't touch the computer I have for the price I paid.  I may pick XP up from ebay, I haven't decided yet.

Well, I've been doing some research and M$ has a product called Virtual PC that's free for home users.  It allows Vista to co-exist with a number of other OSes and you can just hit  key sequence to task switch between the OSes.  I wonder if I use Virtual PC with XP, will I be using the XP TCP/IP stack.  This solution would be a pain in the rear, but I suppose it's doable for online gaming.

Virtual PC for Windows has been around since 2001. Microsoft decided to make Virtual PC 2004 for Windows free in 2006. Virtual PC for Windows 2007 came out in February of this year.

Virtual PC 2007 does not support home version of Windows. Supported operating systems are Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86); Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition; Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Ultimate; Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

WHAT?? ahh crap, i was gonna install that tommorow...  Grin if my old copy of VB4.0 works, i'll let y'all know

But btw... check my specs in the sig  Smiley but i havnt had any stuttering etc for any of my games. CFS2, CFS3, FS2002, wolfenstein ET, and BF2 all run fine... nothing under 30fps. Oddly enough, doom1 seems to be my stuttery-est game, although I think thats doom1's fault  Wink

Are you running those online?  I can play my games in single player mode with no studdering.  But it's the on-line gaming that gives me studdering.  After doing some research, the best explaination I saw has to do with Vista's TCP/IP stack.

Before I got Vista, purely because the mobo of my old computer crapped out, I read a consensus that if you already have XP, then don't upgrade to Vista - for now.  But like me, when you buy a new computer, you have no choice.

Don't get me wrong.  Vista has a bunch of cool features that I like, but a bunch of cool features don't make up for shortcomings in the core operating system, such as the TCP/IP stack and the Vista User Access Control which forces developers to have to upgrade their development software.

BF2 and Wolfenstien et I play online, and they work fine with me. well...

About wolfenstien: does anybody know how to get the darn thing to work on vista? I've ran it as admin, i've ran it with no punkbuster, with punkbuster, i've updated punkbuster twice (manually), i've even disabled my firewall for a few minutes to try to get it to work... THe problem is, when I connect to 50% of servers, it gives me an error (something to do with a dll being unpure). The other 50% of servers I get in fine, then get kicked by punkbuster after about 20 seconds.
A friend of mine runs two servers, and one doesnt let me in, while the other just kicks after 20 seconds. Both servers use the same configs and all, same version of punkbuster etc.
I'm stumped...  Undecided
I'm also installing Win2000 pro on another hard disk  Smiley

Punkbuster kicks me unless I run COD UO as administrator.  But the lagging is still there.  When I join a server, i sometime announce that everyone is free to laugh at me when I become fodder because of all the studdering.
