Hello all, I am building my simpit's FMC using DYT kits from opencockpits (Spain) and I am close to finish it. My second project was to build a radio stack using the same kits from open cockpits, ( http://www.andare-ing.com/uploads/Opencockpits%20MULTI-RADIO_i.pdf ) but the whole process including shipping is going to cost US$150.

I decided to try Go Flight's GF-166 or GF-46 which cost the same and built and tested. Now my question is can I use one of these without the GF-P8 which the online manual suggests? Has anyone used/is using one of them? If so, can I program them to perform all thCOM/NAV/ADF/XPDR functions say...by pressing a dedicated button on them? Or are they made to handle only one funciton unless they are connected with the GF-P8?

Any help appreciated.
Regards, ermias

With the GF-46 you can program 6 functions:
for example  NAV1, NAV2, COM1, COM2, ADF, XPNDR.
You the cycle through each function by pressing the button - so you don't need the GF-P8
However with this you can only set the frequencies direct..there is no standby mode.

If you go for the GF-166 you will be able to input a standby frequency and swap to the active when required but I don't think you can toggle through different radios unless you have the GF-P8 or the RP48.  I'll check this out tomorrow and get back to you

Regards

Jim

Thankyou very much. This is reassuring. I will decide which to order after I hear what you will have to say tomorrow. Thank you for the quick reply again.

ermais,

I have four of the GF-166 VRP units as my radio stack.  They are very "real" looking in that configuration.  One is set up as switching between com1/com2 via the right hand button.  One is nav1 and another is nav2 with the right hand button letting me swap them back and forth (reverse which is which).... the left hand buttons are set up on both to turn the ident tone on/off.  The last VRP is set up as the ADF.

They work great.  I've been very happy with my Goflight stuff.  But I keep them all running at usb 1.0 NOT on usb 2.0..... which some Goflight users have found can be a problem.

If you can afford it..... the four unit setup I think is a good layout.  While I frequently use nav 1 and nav 2 and even the adf on all at the same time for navigation functions.... I almost never find the need to deal with com1 and com2 at the same time.

Here is an old shot from an earlier thread of mine that shows the Goflight VRPs in place (before I had the last one at the top installed.... which in this shot is still a dummy paper printout left over from my pit design work.  The last Goflight unit below the radios is the RP-48, which acts mainly as an audio panel for me.

...

best,

My apologies for not getting back sooner but yesterday was manic.

The 166 will only store 2 different radios  you can then use one of the buttons to switch the radio

COM1 - COM2,
COM1 - NAV1,
NAV1 - NAV2,
COM2 - NAV2,
ADF - XPDR.

However with a GF-P8 you can program 6 functions : NAV1, NAV2, COM1, COM2, ADF & XPNDR (XPNDR does not have a standby mode).  The other 2 buttons can be programmed for NEXT and PREV so that you can cycle through.

Yeah... and that is a BIG oversight.  If it had that single function, it would be FAR more realistic...and allow it's use for stuff like VATSIM.

Thnkyou both Jim and John for the detailed help about the Go Flight radios. I am very much interested in the GF-166 as it is more realistic and gives the flexibility of having swapable functionality. But one must purchase several of them to exercise the full range of navigation systems. At the same time the GF-46 is a lot cheaper and incooprates all the functions even if it doesn't allow standby modes.
I guess, for now, I will order the GF-46 and I will gradually upgrade to the more realistic GF-166 in the future. Thanks again.

If you use the 46 remember that you will need to amend your Aircraft.cfg files to remove the standby frequency.
