Does that mean Chevs with HEMIs, or Cadillacs looking like Chrysler 300Cs?

I found this report at MSN Autos. Maybe Cadillac with adopt the Chrysler 300C design, but I guess they are buying Chrysler to reduce the amount of competition and so that GM can use some of Chrysler's technologies.

It is all as inbred as a Hill Billy wedding, so don't expect too much of a difference Grin

A small correction, I believe the rumor (or has it become official yet) is that GM is looking to buy Chrysler from Daimler.  I don't think GM is going to buy Daimler (Mercades).  That would put Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge (and maybe some others) under GM.

Also, some corrections to the list of who owns who:

I didn't think Daimler Chrysler owned Hyundai.  They may have a small piece of it but I don't think they have a controlling stake.

This is great.  I really hope that GM does in fact purchase Chrylser (and hopefully with it the Dodge name will go as well).  The reason is, my best friend is a HUGE Mopar guy...and being a Chevy guy we always argue over who is better.  If GM owns Dodge, then I win.   Cool

Any purchase of Chrysler Corp. would have to meet the approval of the stockholders and the SEC, which may be too high a hurdle to overcome. They should have let them sink 25 years ago.

The stockholders and SEC let the Daimler buyout go ahead so I don't see why a GM or Hyundai or other buyout would be any different.

Correct.  DaimlerChrysler is looking to sell off the Chrysler group and GM may me interested.  SHould be interesting if the deal goes throught.

You are also correct with Hyundai.  THey are there own company.  Chrysler has actually since sold its share in the company.

There's actually a rumor that if Daimler sells the Chrysler group that they will hold on to Jeep.

I really don't think there is anything to worry about as far as vehicle quality guys.  If this even happens...its likely that nothing will change at all, except the profits will be going to a different parent company.

Except GM might cut down on Chrysler's line up so as to not compete with its own cars...I.E. Slow down Ram production to not compete with their trucks.

Right, buy a company so you can run it in to the ground.  Makes sense...

If GM buys Chrysler than Ram trucks WILL BE GM trucks.

As far as buying a company to run it into the ground, its called eliminating competition.  Right now, their are some market segments in which the two companies compete and some in which they dont.  GM will make sure that if they buy the company theyll make sure they arent cannbalizing eachother.

When I say GM trucks, Im talking about the GM manufactured GMT900 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.  The Rams until they are redesigned would be manufactured by Chrysler plants using the same amount of Chrysler Parts, making them Chrysler trucks.  Its like when two airlines merge, they cut down on flights on certain routes because their may not be a need for the flights from both preexisting carriers.

Some models, like the DOdge Caliber, would probably be kept because that is a market where GM really doesnt have an entry.

To add, it is like AA buying TWA to essentially fly them into the ground.

Why buy it then?  If their product is worse than yours then just compete with them head to head and drive them out of the segment.  If their prodcut is superior to yours then why buy them and substitute your own product instead of keeping their product and dropping yours?

Sure, when one company buys another they do wittle away their redundant products.  That just makes sense.  The way I read your post though it sounded like GM's motivation for buying Chrysler was simply to torpedo them.  That would be like buying a Fabroge egg just to smash it.  Sure there's one less egg around to worry about but you're also out a LOT of cash in the process.

Presumably they wouldnt just torpedo it.  But, if it were to come down to Ram vs. Silverado, we know who the general would probably favor.

Well if GM will use Dodge Trucks then GMC is going to have to go! Chevy Trucks and GMC are the same thing only in a different dealership. I guess GM wants to completely outsell Ford.
