Please, if you want to join any Multiplayer flight and you happen to have a router, open up your ports. How you can do that you can find it all in the sticky subjects on the top of this part of the forum.

Ports to be open:

TCP&UDP: 23456
TCP&UDP: 23432

Thanks in advance,

I know, but I'm getting sick and tired not being able to connect to or getting thrown off the server because of this. So I thought to bring it under the attention of the members. It might help, you never know.....

Your old Chum, Fozzer, is one of the lucky ones who has never had one of those troublesome "Router" thingies.... Smiley...!

I could never see the point of the bleedin' things..!
They seem to be more trouble than they are worth...Wink...!

My trusty "Thompson Speedtouch" Broadband Modem plugs directly into my phone line, and I have no problems with Ports, Firewalls, etc.... Cool...!

The funny thing is, I can't ever remember getting thrown out, or getting disconnected, in any Multiplayer activity... Smiley....!

Any idea how big that thing is? You could hurt an elefant with that! LOL I have no problems with routers what so ever, as long as everybody reads a manual or follows some advice. And I can remember there were times I couldn't connect or got thrown of when I still had my Thompson DSL modem.

You'll see if in the new flight plans -

Hopefully THAT, and the other users will listen, and pay attention.

Don't you hve to open the appropriate ports on the COMPUTER as well as the router / dsl modem?

From this posting it seems to imply that the only ports that need to be opened are those on the router itself.  My understanding of this is a bit different.  Anyone running XP SPII with the firewall running has to open the ports in that too.

Jimbo / Sam...... am I wrong?

I'm unfortunately forced to deal with a router, because I share a broadband connection with six other users... but setting it up for MP was no big deal.

Occasionally, though, the routers throw a little fit or something, and have to be reset... annoying.
And when we first added a second router to gain more network ports... what a pain...!! They just would not play nice together...
Hours and hours on the phone with tech support... and of course the routers and my terminal are almost 200 feet apart- must have walked a coupla miles that night going back and forth! Cheesy

Another thing if your router supports it is run your FS computer on a DMZ host IP, it makes the said IP pretty much bypass all router settings so its like you are plugged right into the modem. I fought and fought with my router to open ports and then found the DMZ setting, never had a problem since.

Gunnerman,

I BELEIVE that with DMZ you are now TOTALLY wide open bidriectionally to the whole net, any IP.  NOT something you want to do unless it is a dedicated FS machine ....and you don't mind fixing viruses and the results of hacking.  Wink

At least that is my understanding of that approach.

Sort of like killing a mouse with an elephant gun.   Wink  It works....... but it is maybe a little "overkill"?

One of the things that people sometimes miss in setting up ports is that they need to be BIDIRECTIONALLY opened.  Incoming and outgoing.

best,

The windows firewall is easily bypassed ....... in your control panel click on the firewall icon, followed by the exceptions tab and allow FS as an excepted program which is allowed to access the internet unhindered ..... no need for fiddling with ports.
