1735 - The first colonial-produced opera, "Flora," was performed in Charleston, South Carolina.
130 years later (1865), the city's mayor evidently thought the possibility of prison would be a
better sentence than a lifetime of opera (or that it would scare them away once they got in),
surrendering Charleston to Union Brigadier General Alexander Schimmelfennig

*Would one of our German komeraden confirm that this is an actual surname and not someone with a
          mouthful of coins?

1930 - Given title as the ninth planet of our solar system, the planetoid (in contrast to Disney's
cartoon canine -- another little fellow starring in bigger circles) Pluto, was discovered at the
Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, by astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh.

It is a surname.
