Open door to new Sims? (Read 244 times)

There was a topic posted about MS Train Sim now under development by Aces.

So I went to the blogs posted by the MSTS devs, and came across something interesting.
Not sure if this has ever been discussed around here, but here it is.

Quote:
As we strived to bring back the Train Sim franchise, we looked back to understand what caused us to let down TS in the first place.  One factor, though not the only one, was that the Aces studio found itself in a position of having to maintain three separate sets of code-- Flight Sim, Train Sim, and Combat Flight Sim.  There was little to no sharing of the code between these three products, and that turned out to be a big problem for us.

The reason is that every chunk of code does not stand alone.  It needs to be tested....
(snip)
... and we didn't have enough time or people to tend to all three (completely disjoint) sets of code, especially when much of the code was just different ways of doing the same thing ("redundant" in dev-lingo).

So we made the painful decision to let go of two (CFS and TS) so that we could focus 100% of our attention on making the remaining one (Flight Sim) as magnificient as possible.

He goes on to say though, that FSX was a flight sim developed with broader Sims in mind. This being demonstrated now by the news of a new MSTS, based on FSX.

To me this means, yes, they are going to make a new Train Sim, but since he also mentions CFS specifically it suggests they may make a CFS 4. You have to have a Windows Live login to post comments, so I did not toss him the questions directly.  I may in the future.

Anyway,  my wonderings on the product(s).

Well Train sim is finally coming back I knew that (I am glad too) I remember when they scrapped it, I was mad... CFS could very well come back but I don't know, CFS3 took a lot of flaming, but I liked it none the less. I loved CFS and the train sim.

What is interesting is that if there was a new CFS, it would be based on FSX.

If I recall some older versions of CFS were based on some of the earlier versions of FS, with CFS3 being a major departure.

I know all the code will br similar.  But I doubt it will all be compatible.

Since MSTS had its own niche, it can come back with some chance of success.

But CFS3, despite looking nice and having a neat dynamic campaign, was always in the shadows of the IL-2 series.
