Yes..
I found out itīs an add.... but this does not mean itīs fake.
The explosion and so on is real.. Iīm quite sure. Making this completly in CG would cost you 10 time the money than making this real (and it wouldnīt look that realistic).

Sure the explosion is real. Problem is you have to make a very big explosion (not the one in the video) to make waves like that. Watch the movie closely. The water he enters is some sort of canal or small pond. Then you have the explosion by somebody throwing dynamite(?) into the water and you see someone surfing. Look at the surroundings. They are completely different. The surfing is done at the beach. No way a small explosion can make a wave like that. It would ripple the water but never enough to surf on it.

Heh the water is CG and the camera shake was artificially done in post production. The surfer guy was at the beach surfing and they superimposed surfing shot onto the shot of the small pond. Plus if you throw dymnamite into the water, I believe the fuse wouldn't stay lit long enough to explode like that. You would need some primacord to make a real explosion like that. Its a good effect but the look of the water looks too artificial to me.

And actually it would be cheaper to do this in CG because if you plan on doing it for real, fire, rescue and police would have to be there. The surrounding area would have to be closed off to the public. Only those that are working on the production would be in the filming zone. So doing all that would cost a production company alot more money if than just hiring a few CG artists to create the fluid dynamics of the water and composite it into the live action shot.

I'm posting this video over on the CG Society website to see what others have to say about this. These guys over there actually work in the film and television industry.

Well Iīm in the FX business for more than 10 years. I donīt know one software that could make water like that. (Especially when it comes to foam and breeaking waves).
I could imagine that it was composed... from various shots. But not CG !!

This is the best water simulating software Iīve seen.

But watch the foam in some of the clips. It still looks artificial unlike the foam in the Dynamite video.

DreamScape plugin for 3DS Max should be able to do that. Or maybe 3D Aliens Glu3D CG fluids simulator could probably do it as well.

One of the guys over at the CG Society website identified the clip and who made it. He said it was made by Saatchi from Denmark and I guess they make really cool ads.

Yes.. itīs from Saatchi and a fantastic clip !!
Well I own both Dreamscape and Glu3D
and both are nice plugins but they are definately not capable of doing such effects.
I have seen tons of fluid dynamic plugins. But so far I have not seen one plugins or cgclip
that makes a realistic looking breaking wave !!
