im not sure if this has been posted before, but im doing it anyway, to help my wingmen out Smiley

these are all the stock flyable aircraft glidespeeds directly out of the manual

BEST GLIDE SPEED
Wildcat            100kts

Hellcat            130kts

Corsair                     140kts

P-38            160kts

M2 Zero            90kts

M5 Zero            90 kts

George            110kts

the performance specifications below are at 95% medium settings. the range includes taking off, climbing within 0-10 knots above best glide speed, up to cruise altitude at 100% throttle, and flying at 100% throttle until the tanks are dry (no external stores of any kind). i did the homework of physically flying and documenting the distances, speeds, etc. just because i wanted to know for myself at the time.

the ranges shown are one half of what youll get at cruise alt (cruise alt. according to the manual) when flying in a straight line. for example; when your A6M2 runs dry,  youll be nearly 500 miles from your base. i used half because its typically appreciated to get back home after a mission. plus, if you ARE at cruise on the way home and sputter out, you can just glide back down, and im almost completely certain youll be able to make it. (range varies if youre returning to a moving carrier)

PERFORMANCE CAPABILITY

M2 Zero
237kts(IAS)@14,930 ft   Max alt:32,810      Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle:247 miles

M5Zero
230kts(IAS)@19,685 ft   Max alt:38,520      Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle:248 miles

George
261kts(IAS)@18,370 ft   Max alt:39,698      Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle:191 miles

Wildcat
205kts(IAS)@19,400 ft     Max alt:34,900    Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle:187 miles

Hellcat
260kts(IAS)@17,300 ft      Max alt:38,400   Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle and with water injection:215 miles

Corsair
264kts(IAS)@19,900 ft      Max alt36,900    Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle:360 miles

P-38F
232kts(IAS)@25,000 ft      Max alt:39,000   Range@cruise alt at
100% throttle:296 miles

and yes, the corsair has better range than the lightning. this is not a typo.

S!

No WWII combat plane in the game cruses @ 100% throttle.  All have a specific manifold pressure, prop pitch & mixture settings for max cruise.

Setting up for cruise properly will most likely increase the range by 50 - 100% over full throttle.

The same goes for best climb speed.

i did neglect to state that it was with the "enable auto mixture". i was giving the specs for full throttle. i know that range is drastically increased simply by pulling throttle back to even 80%, let alone the many other variables available, but i didnt want to go through all that again. the whales, dolphins, and other points of interest were severely lacking from the the waters near the island i took off from, and i got bored of seeing the water Wink

Not sure about the cfs2 aircraft but recips big and small often do cruise at full throttle at high altitudes, even when supercharged. But it is not max power by any means and you are not overloading the engine. Since the air is so thin up there you can't attain full engine power in those conditions.

There is the opposite condition, very cold at sea level, where you can't use full throttle on take off because you can indeed overload the engine.

I don't know if these things get simulated well. It has been a long time since I flew a real big recip but it was done mostly with an eye on the manifold pressure gauge.

Max range altitude for these aircraft was generally at or below 25,000ft, give or take  a few thousand & thier best cruise speed was well below thier maximum speed for these altitudes.

Even the ultra-long range, for its time, B-29's best economical cruising speed was 220 mph at 25,000. B-29A's  maximum speed was 357 mph at 30,000 feet feet.

The B-24 ran at 180-215mph below 25,000 while its maximum continuous speed at 25,000 feet was 278 mph.

The other long range heavy the B-17G was also in the 25,000ft range at 150mph while its maximum speed at 25,000 feet was 263 mph.

I have tested it and for missions made after my little modifcation (NOT FOR THE PURESTS OUT THERE) but when you go into the MISC. DATA part of the .DP file and change the cruise speed (which i believe is in KPH) all new missions built in MB will have that speed as default.

What do I do you ask? I struggle! Then destroy! Then try to put back together what I just broke on accident.....&&&&&&&&&&                        The GMax effect... The GMax effect
