What instrument do you play? (Read 2067 times)

I know this has probably been discussed before, but I never come down here and I'm bored (day off of school for MLK day, and all I have to do is study for an economics test
)
So what musical instrument do you play? If you play more than one, what's your favorite?
I'll start it off: I began playing piano..jeez...probably 10 years ago (or more). I then stopped that and got a guitar about 7 or 6 years ago (must have been 11 or 12). Then when I was 13 I got an electric guitar as a Bar Mitzvah present, a Gibson SG Special, mahoganyish (deep red) unfinished wood with crescent moon shaped inlays (now its rare, they stopped making it with those inlays about a year after I got it). It's American made, too
A month or so ago I got a used Fender Squire bass guitar because I wanted to learn how to play the bass (always loved the sound they make ESPECIALLY in blues songs) and now I play that.
I would have to say that my favorite is the bass, not the bass itself but its my favorite to play. I've only been playing for a month but I really enjoy it and I seem to be almost a natural at it. Eventually I'm gonna get a new one, but this one is fine (hundred bucks and all that is 'used' about it is some scratches that I would have put on it anyways and a replaced knob but I can pick up new knobs for like 10 bucks)
Now its your turn...

Drums and mandolin are my basics. However I also play a bit of bass and I used to play guitar until I smashed my hand up.

I played drums "semi-pro" for something like 12 years. I packed it in soon after my daughter was born & taught myself the guitar for my own amusement. Got quite good at it even if I say so myself. I also play piano & keyboards very badly. The guitar is my favourite instrument (I have two) although I haven't picked one up for some years.

Doug, do you have any pics of you on drums? It'd be interesting to see what kind of set you played.
Here's one of me that was taken yesterday at a show.

Guitar since 1964. Rock, classical, some jazz, all very advanced. Keyboards, specifically Baroque repertoire mixed in there somewhere for 8 years, not so advanced but educational.
Yep, everything from Bach to Black Sabbath and everything in between. What a trip it's been. First rock group: Jan 1967 to March 1970, second from Jan 1971 to May 1973. Then classical guitar studies, classical guitar ensembles, teaching guitar, etc.
Yeah, it's been discussed before, but there are a lot of newbies here we want to include. Keep on pluckin', or bowin', or whatever guys!!

It took a bit of finding but this is about the best I have. Taken around 1965 (when I was young & handsome
) at Gatwick Manor nightclub. We only played at the best venues.
The kit is a Trixon. I'm sure I've posted it before.

Trumpet Was the funnest thing I ever played Trombone was the worst, sounded good but I don't have long arms and the Baritone.... Sounds like a trombone but plays like a trumpet, Was alright but we always had boring slow parts that were rarely heard..... I liked the trumpet best. Lips got too big for the mouth piece though so I had to change. Played the trumpet for a year and a half, Trombone for 8 months, Baritone for 2 years.

Looks like they were just bringing the free beer for the band... "'Ey, we're gettin' paid tonight after all!"
I can remember at least one gig where we had to hunt down the proprietor to collect our money...
Great stuff, Doug- I hadn't seen that yet, I think. Matching turtlenecks... I could rarely be counted on to wear a shirt at all...
Speaking of which, I believe I posted a pic of myself thumping the ol' tubs in a semi-godawful college cover band eons ago, but... oh, that's too bad... I can't find it.
Oh well.

The second violin part to Beethovens 7th isn't too bad if I remember rightly. Now if you want a challenge for second violin parts try 3 hours of Strauss waltzes (sober)...... thank god I wasn't .... sober that is!!

...good-for-you, Alonso...
...!
The advantage of a keyboard, is that it is laid out horizontally in front of you, and therefore it is easy to practice, and recognise the spacing of notes for Major and Minor, etc, scales and chords, and remember them, to aid you in playing other instruments which require the same intervals...
...!
My first musical instrument, almost 70 years ago, was my Mothers upright Pianoforte, and constantly playing and taking lessons on it, has enabled to to play almost every other instrument, (which I do)...
...!
I still continue with playing and practicing on my various keyboards to keep myself "in tune", in between playing my other various instruments...

P.S. Piano practice doesn't help "Drummers" very much...

Hello, Fly...
"Percussionists", I love...very clever musicians, with a natural sense of rhythm...
...!
Talking about reading music, you must use a different music "score" to play your "DRUM" percussion instruments...!
...I must browse the Internet for more information...
...!
Fascinating...!!
Paul...I play everything, and anything...(except "Drums"!)...
....
...!
P.S. I think our "Moderator", Dave, "Fly2e" is also a "Drummer"...

Well, marimba, xylophone, bells, chimes, and glockenspiel is in treble clef.. timpani is in bass clef, as well as other non-keyboard percussion parts. I'm not sure why though. "Drum" music is just rhythm.

Talking about reading music, you must use a different music "score" to play your "DRUM" percussion instruments...!
Well, marimba, xylophone, bells, chimes, and glockenspiel is in treble clef.. timpani is in bass clef, as well as other non-keyboard percussion parts. I'm not sure why though. "Drum" music is just rhythm.
Hello Fly...
...!
When I mentioned "Music Score" for the Drums, I meant what on the score tells you which member of your Drum set you have to strike, and how, at a particular time...?
ie: Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Tom, Cymbals, Hi-Hat, Block....rim taps, rolls, crashes, etc...?
How are they illustrated on the Music Score...?
..know what I mean...?
It has to be a different method from other instruments..!

I gotcha Paul. This is a scan of one of the songs I'm currently performing in the pit orchestra for our school's rendition of "Brigadoon".
It's different for most scores. In this case, it's written for the bass drum on the lower line, with the snare and cymbal up higher on the staff.
It's easier for you just to see it, I think.
..by the way, one guy playing six instruments for this play is tough! Real tough!

Hello James...
That's it...
...!
Thanks for the scan of the music score.....that is exactly what I was thinking...
...!
Synthesizer players in the '70's and '80's had to use a similar method to score their various "effects" whilst playing the keyboard...
...!
Cheers Mate....Have fun with the Play...

It's a mixture of natural talent, hard work and luck

Providing that it doesn't slow down the thread, perhaps we all could get together and start our own .gif animation Orchestra/Pop group...

I started playing drums as early as I can remember, since drums were just "in the house". My dad was a musician...... involved in the military bands as a band leader (as well as MP) in Europe during WWII. He played clubs a bit after the war. Somehow I just picked it up through genetics and availability of the instruments. By 13 years old... I was playing professionally in clubs ("bar issues" were a tad easier to overcome way back then). Played in bands all through high school.
In college in the late 60's a friend and I got a band together (Clear Sky) that lead to a lot of success for about 5 years ...... at first just college gigs....but then we lived together and played together over the summers... and then we were FT after college. All that time it resulted in lots of $ in the pocket, lots of travel and gigs, NYC recording studios, a major label ready to sign us, and so on. But with the real "big time" about in our hands....... too may years, too many gigs, too much "road"... and we all simply burned out on the music business. But it was a fun ride while it lasted
.
Still have my kit...... Gretch with Zildjins all around........... but I haven't played since about 1972 except a pick up gig once about 4 years ago.
Hagar's photo near the beginning of the thread got me searching thru the photo albums.........
Below... a very old shot of CLEAR SKY on stage in a concert (god knows where this was .....it all became a blur
) in about 1970-71. From left to right......... Gary Morris (guitar), me (drums), Christine Duquette (lead vocal), Rolo Besaw (bass), Bob Henderson (guitar).
best,
