12th January 1991 - The US Congress votes for war in Iraq, the start of a new chapter of world history, and the beginning of the (drawn out) end of Saddam Hussein and his tyrranical regime...

Today is also the 4th anniversary of the death of Maurice, of the Brothers Gibb, and the 31st anniversary of the death of one of the most popular crime-writers and novelists of the 20th century, Agatha Christie.

Stalin died in his bed, as did Pol Pot but under house arrest,  Pinoche died in his bed too. Mao also managed, as did Franco along with Idi Amin.  Slobodan Milosevic even to a degree managed to leave the world via his bed. I would imagine that Robert Mugabi will too, along with Kim Jong Il, Fidel Castro, Than Shwe but just to name a few. Still do not understand why Saddam was so special. And in this very short the list there are KNOWN WMD's.
I guess there are two types of human abuse, Saddam and the rest of the worlds mad fucked up dictators.

Ahh, but Saddam had oil.

This brings and interesting point I noticed the other week. People mention Stalin, Mao, Amin, Pol Pot etc, then mention Pinochet in the same sentence. Slightly dubious as his regime may have been, his crimes were the equivalent of stealing a penny sweet in a newsagent compared to the others.

Not quite sure the families of the 30,000 "disappeared" would agree on the Pinochet penny sweet comparison, except Mrs T perhaps. A bit of help in the Faulklands Conflict does not make him a good guy. That's like saying the Taliban whom "we" put in place and helped during the Russian invasion are now a bunch of misguided soles who just need a hour in front of an over head projector and a motivational speech to put them on the right track.

I was merely considering the number of confirmed deaths at the hands of his administration, so around 3000. I wasn't condoning it in any way.

I mean, all those guys did what a dictator had to do to keep his power.
So why would you kill/punish someone just for doing his job?

Because punishing them is everyone else's job; it's just that no one else excells at their job until they've overly axelled at theirs.

Should Tony Blair and George Bush be on that list?
It would be hard for me not to put them on there!  After all....they are just as bad as most of those dictators!

Please, do the world a favour, and get rid of Bush and Blair.

Politically yes...
I wouldn't wish death on anyone, no matter what they have done.
I shall go no further, I don't want to be guilty of saying things too political here!

It's a fair point with Pinochet. But I'm wondering why Castro's on that list of evil dictators. I'm willing to bet that he's killed less of his own countrymen than Bush in the last 6 years.

Castro and Kim are nothing more than followers of left movement. Okay, one of them lives in peace and somehow in prosperity while the other one screams for attention at every occasion.

But both are no madmen at all.

I would be quite interested to see you make a serious argument supporting such a point of view.  I've seen all the ridiculous, unfactual and historically unsupportable arguments, a serious discussion would be refreshing.
