Well, considering Thai Airline has so far, rejected Airbus's offer to sell them A330s at almost 1/2 off to compensate for A380 delays and Germany is laying off 8000 workers due to delays, one wonders if those deliveries to Singapore Airline might be the only A380's we see flying commercially.

Sure. Except Singapore and Thai airlines arn't the only airlines that have ordered A380's. Also, you only say that Thai have only refused half price A330's. You don't say that they've cancelled all their A380 orders.



LOL!!!!  You gotta be kidding!  Do you think Airbus was just being altruistic by offering Thai Airline 1/2 price A330s?  Airbus is jumping through hoops to keep Thai Airline's business!   Grin

It may look nicer, have slightly wider seats, fly faster, and ticket cost should also drop over time.  But when it comes to comfort...it doesnt matter how wide the seat is...its how much leg room there is.  The Malaysia 747-400's i was on had a wonderfull 34 inch pitch...width was only a whopping 17 inches but not causing the problem.  It was the fact my knees were jammed in the seat infront of me and made worse when the people reclined.  Airlines cram to many seats into these long range birds...they need to leave out a few rows and give you more leg room.  I litteraly had more legroom on the little American ERJ-145's.  Long distance air travel is no fun anymore, its all a hassle with security then your crammed into a plane for 14 hours.  Its time the airlines stop treating everyone like cattle and start making it better for the passenger.  Ide rather pay $100 extra on the ticket and get decent leg room in Economy then be crammed in like now.  Taking a guess...there was no more then 10-12 inches from the edge of my seat to the back of the other...and when someone reclines that takes away 5 Angry  $1100 to be on those 2 flights...i wasnt pleased at all...for an aircraft the size of a 747 i would have expected better Angry  First class would have been $7500 Undecided

When they fill a plane with as many seats as they can and leave out the comfort factor it makes it not even worth the money to fly Sad

The reason for that is I make it my business to only post what I know to be the facts as best as possible.  There is no report stating Thai Airlines have cancelled their order.  In fact, the negotiations, though are currently not yielding any successes are still ongoing.  But what we do know is Thai Airlines have currently rejected the offer to be sold those A330s at roughly 1/2 price.  Basically this might read like this:

"OK, you're really late with our order, that's affecting planning for our operations in the near future.  This has negative reprocussions for our business.  I appreciate your offer of selling us those A330s, but including those planes in our fleet does not fit in our strategy.  We need the A380s, not A330s.  For us to accept this severe inconvenience, you have to do better than that. So come back with a better offer and we're willing to listen."

BTW: The 787 looks fat and ugly to me! A380 looks much better!!

FED-Ex and UPS have both cancelled their A380 orders. However, neither order was for a significant number of aircraft and Airbus probably arn't lamenting the fact that they don't have to make a cargo version for the forseeable future.

According to Aviation weekly the 787 is scheduled to enter service sometime in 2008.  Personally I am excited about the airplane as it offers a number of improvements in efficiency and technology.  I actually got to see the second ever GEnx engine being built up at GE's development lab and it was very impressive.  I am a bit surprised at the lack of believe in the program exits and is on schedule.  You don't build an airplane like this http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1124974/L/ for a paper airplane.  Smiley

As far as the A380 goes I am thinking airlines will pile as many seats as they can into it.  Personally I would not want to be on an airplane with 800 other people.  Just imagine if you only had one jet way as well!   I hope it finds its niche though.  There needs to be competition in the big jet market.

I'm sure the 787 will be a fine aeroplane, but unless it flies within the next 6-9 months I doubt it'll be in service before 2009. Smiley

Looking at various web sites show a "planned" first flight in August 07. That is in less than 8 months. If that was happening one would expect to be seeing rather more than the sections we've seen so far - in fact I would expect to see an almost complete aeroplane in final assembly.

Indeed, and thanks for the link.

Interesting to read about the scepticism about fulfilling the 420 order break even point. The aircraft has around 160 orders so far - about a 3rd of that total. Taking into account the life cycle of aircraft types (not individual aircraft) nowadays being 25-35 years minimum. It's as though people expect them to be at the break even point straight away. It may take 10-15 years to fulfill that quota, which is entirely reasonable.

Just checked Boeing's website   http://www.boeing.com/commercial/787family/news/2007/q1/070112a_pr.html  From my understanding Boeing's goal is to have each assembly completed as much as possible before they are all joined.  I don't see 8 months as being an unreasonable goal, not all aircraft development programs are slow and constantly late.
