Use this website:

http://adds.aviationweather.gov/metars/

Type in the airport identifier and then check either METARs or TAFs..

You can see what the wind is (and is forcast to be) .. THat will let you know what runway is in use   Wink

Example..  Here's a METAR from KLGA:

KLGA 281751Z 24009KT 10SM BKN090 OVC250 07/M03 A3036

That says,  On the 28th day at 1751zulu, wind was 240 at 9knots;  10 mile visibility; broken at 9000msl;  overcast at 25,000msl; temperature is 7; dewpoint is -3;  barometric pressure is 30.36 inches .....

That would mean that they're most likely using runway 22    Smiley

When do you think they would use runway 4???  When the wind is blowing from the North??? There's an observation area for plane spotters right by runway 4 so thats why I would like to know when I can go.
I have noticed that they rarely use runway 4 for landing over land. Usually they land over the bay. When they do land over land on runway 4, then its a lot of fun to watch a plane come over you very close. Actually it can even be a little bit frightening because they're close enough that it looks like they might land on you!!! There is a good reason they dont take off from runway 4 overland though...... well, a lot of roof repairmen would get jobs lol. I once was in a spot where i was looking at them from the side and it was fun to see how they just clear the runway right before taking a drink. Especially planes like the 757-200 and the 737-800. They pitch up for about 75 feet before getting airborn. That only adds to the drama of getting off the La Guardia runway before having to swim for it.
If you want to see what I mean about the landings on 4 inland then just go to

http://flightlevel350.com/

and then on the left side where it has all the details to search, look up La Guardia under USA. Then watch the 4th and 5th video. I tried to get a link but it wouldnt work.

I was even closer than that lol. Grin

Thanks for all your help  Cool

Do you understand what runway numbers mean ?

They're the magnetic heading you'd be on while using that runway, divided by 10. Hence runway 04 has an aproximate heading of 040 Degrees.

Runway 22 (same as 04 but in the opposite direction) would have a heading of 220.

The two (four) runways at LGA are 04/22  and  13/31. They're conveniently at right angles, so that makes figuring out the runway in use, a little easier.

In the METAR above.. the wind was 240; a mere 20 degrees from 220, so runway 22 would be used. The other runways (13/31) would not be used, because for runway 31 (310) the wind is a ful 70 degrees off runway heading (90 degrees being a perfect crosswind).. and for runway 13 (130) it's a full 110 degrees off (20 degrees into being a tail-wind)..  And obviously, for runway 04, it would be just 20 degrees from being a perfect tailwind.

...

Edit:  To answer your question; The wind would have to be somewhere between 355 and 085 for runway 04 to be in use. At 350 they'd be using runway 31; and at 090 they'd be using 13

(this is all +/- a few degrees of course  ...  If it's right on the border between any two, they aren't going to change runways for a 5 degree shift in the wind)

Runways 22 and 04 are the same stretch of tarmac. Assuming planes don't just stay at the airport for ever then I would presume that anyone spotting on runway 04 would be getting the aircraft as they take off.

Do a google for air traffic control audio and you should turn up a web page that broadcasts real time ATC audio for a variety of US airports including LaGuardia.  If you listen to the LaGuardia approach, tower, etc for a couple of minutes it becomes pretty obvious what runway is in use.  Plus, it's super cool!

Im pretty sure that they dont take off runway 4. Why, because buildings are deadly close to the end of the runway and when the planes lift off from LGA it usually pitches up for about 10 seconds before getting proper lift to start climbing. A 757-200 would proly de-roof a few buildings before it got the chance to get real lift.

Thankyou for all of your help and I'll be sure to never forget that.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
