I read with wonder the posts people have on their experiences with FS9, FSX, etc. This works, that doesn't, if you look at it cross eyed it's almost like stereo, etc.
I kept plodding to myself, knowing that at best, I had a (now) low end machine, capable of running FS-X with reduced settings (I still am amazed when I see the photo-like screenshots (I had a doubt about some of them, some look more like edited photos to my untrained eye). With an ATI 9000 64M AGP video card, I wasn't expecting much.
THen, the card was being overstressed. The "latest" drivers were slowly causing it conniptions, to the point where, a few days ago, it refused to run any graphics intensive program - FS-X, FS9, and if I was doing something fancy in Paint SHop Pro, ....<groan>
So, I bucked down and bought a new video card, ATI X1900 PCI-E 256M video. However, seeing that my computer doesn't have a PCI-E slot, I had to get a PCI-E slot, which itself was attached to a motherboard with 2G Ram, a 300G HD and an Intel Core2
I bring it home and to my horror, the freaking machine doesn't have a floppy drive, doesn't have a gameport for my trusty Microsoft Sidewinder, and to top it off, I can't connect the monitor because the card doesn't have the standard video connector!
Now we all know that one of the first things we as omniscient animoderators recommend is RTFM. So, I actually did. I opened up the ATI box and had a sudden shortness of breath, palpitations and broke out in sweat., THere are abot 300 connectors and 1,000 ft of cables! Well, not as many, but there, in one of the plastic bags was a monitor connector, itself connected to a special plug. This card can have just about every video device known to (me) connected to it, and there are the connectors to prove it!
I solved the joystick problem with a new Logitech Wingman FF.
Egads! There's actually scenery there that I'd missed in FS9, and even in FSX I'm getting "real" 20fps. The FF stick will take some getting used to, but I think I may actually spend some time using FS-X!
Yes Viriginia, there IS a Santa Claus!
