I will include screenshots of my Task Manager Processes view.  Please could someone who knows what they are talking about tell me what programs I can/cannot shut down.  It would be much appreciated.  I am running nearly 60 processes and I know this can be cut down a great deal.
Here is my system spec for the computer I am using:
DELL Dimension 8400
Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 3.00GHz (2 CPU's)
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition gfx card

Here are the images of the processes screen for me:
...

...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

Start, Run, msconfig, startup, shut everything off except what you want on.... I usually run 24-26 processes at boot, 30-35 when I have all my junk going, Though I've had 40 before!

Cheers, Gunny (I hate these computers like ACER, HP, Dell etc, they expect you to have 50-80 processes out of the box at first boot!)

If you don't know what a process does a program that is handy is Process Explorer, because it tells you what the processes are.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Then you can use MSConfig to disable them from starting up.

I would first go through and clean out all the trial software and other crap off the hard drive before shutting down processes.
Shutting them down doesn't mean freeing resources.

Thats one I forgot PI.... With OEMs just uninstall EVERYTHING you don't need. Helps a lot... And the thing cheese suggested works, I use it.

Anyone see what is eating the most resources?  Grin
I would start by ridding yourself of that Wink

once you get rid of all that stuff that you don't need or want you will see that list get a lot smaller and it will be easier to sift through what you can disable.

Right, if you want to know what I do every time I go simming, do the following:

Start > Run > Type 'msconfig' without the apostrophes > Select the box 'Selective Start-up' > Uncheck 'Process SYSTEM.INI' and 'Process WIN.INI' and 'Load Startup Items' > Click on the 'Services' tab > Check the 'Hide all Microsoft services box' and then 'Disable all' box > Click on the 'Startup' tab > Find your graphics drivers (for me it is CLIStart) and select them > Apply > Restart

That should free up as many system resources as possible.
Do not go onto the internet in this configuration, all of your antivirus/firewalls have been disabled.

Once you have finished simming, simply bring up msconfig again, and select normal startup.

**!!##~DISCLAIMER~##!!**

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ANY CONSEQUENCES/UNWANTED EFFECTS OF THIS PROCEDURE. I HAVE USED THIS EXACT PROCESS HUNDREDS OF TIMES, AND HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED ANY SIDE EFFECTS/PROBLEMS. UNDERSTAND THAT EVERY SYSTEM IS DIFFERENT AND THAT THIS IS A TAYLORED START-UP PROCEDURE FOR MY COMPUTER ONLY, IT IS PROVIDED ONLY AS A GUIDELINE PROCEDURE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM. YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT THIS PROCEDURE IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE WORKINGS OF A COMPUTER'S OPERATING SYSTEM OR WORKING WITH MSCONFIG. I WILL NOT BE HELP RESONSIBLE FOR ANY PROBLEMS, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Alex

PS. Taken from one of NickN's posts:

Apparently people are trying things that are posted in the forums to improve their sim experience. A few are having difficulties with good information for different reasons.

Further, there is the issue of someone reading something elsewhere, trying it and having it work for them and then assuming what they did to their system will work for everyone else and post it.

THIS IS A DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION.

When I post advice to help improve the performance of a system I am very careful to not post anything that will be harmful to any system. If someone attempts what I post and something goes wrong, I KNOW IT WAS NOT due to the information but either user error OR hardware issues specific to their system.

There is a great deal of information regarding Windows tweaking I did/do and WILL NOT post in open forums specifically because going further CAN POSE A SERIOUS RISK TO SOME USERS who may not be running the same version of Windows, are using language support OR be using their system for more than just MSFS.

I know everyone wants to share when they find something that works well for them however if you are NOT SURE what you are posting is something that will have a positive effect for anyone who may read and try it… consider not posting it.

And those that read such information proceed with caution because YOU ASSUME THE FULL RESPONSIBILITY for reading and following such advice in a public forum.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT POSTING TECHNICAL INFORMATION UNLESS YOU KNOW FOR A FACT WHAT YOU POST IS OK FOR EVERYONE TO TRY. And if you do post something, be specific about how it may affect others who could potentially change/damage a Windows install.

When a system is being tweaked YOU run the risk of stressing components which would otherwise have never shown to be defective or unable to handle the increased performance. There is NO DIFFERENCE between tweaking a system and running stress benchmark tests. Both can show defective or stressed component issues even if performed correctly. YOU also run the risk of making changes to your system which may be OK for MSFS but will cause serious problems when other software is run.

As for people sending emails to this site administration for issues they may have after reading and attempting something anyone posts in the forums… that is YOUR PROBLEM.

The site, its owners, staff or ANY of its forum members are no more responsible for the outcome of someone trying tweaks or advice than they are responsible if someone were to download a massive texture fix posted in the files area of this or any other site and have it completely obliterate a MSFS install or have it create other issues in the future.

Just as the USER assumes the responsibility for installing an add-on they also assume the responsibility for reading something in the forums and trying it.

IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND DO NOT HAVE THE EXPERIENCE TO RECOVER IN THE EVENT SOMETHING GOES WRONG... DONT DO IT, AND SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP

Cheers for the help Alex.  Tried it, and FSX is running like a beauty.  Fs9......flies, maxxed out, every slider is full.  FSX is mid-high now, with the tweaks i administered.
Great help, and to echo what Alex and Nick N said...please don't try this.  The information works for me but may not for others.  Back up EVERYTHING.  I once failed to do so when modifying something...comp crashed and I lost a lot of info.
Anyway....cheers for all the help, it is appreciated.
